In my opinion, yes, but that's because I like lightweight hi-tech reels that do the job. If you are more of Penn guy that likes simple, almost overbuilt stuff, then no. I'm also a guy that just rinses stuff off lightly with fresh water and wipes it with a rag. If you are the type of guy that rebuilds a reel everytime you go to saltwater, then it's a bad choice. To me the whole point of the mag seal is to decrease maintenance needs.
Also these are probably poor wading surf reels as I don't know anyone that wades a lot that hasn't dunked a reel, and these are recommended by Daiwa to be sent to a service center urgently following a dunk. For wading, I recommend people to get a truly sealed Van Staal for $500, or go cheap on an Okuma Avenger for $45 so you can toss it if needed.
I don't know that I'd call it 'higher quality'. The BG is a tank. It's an old school, just keeps on ticking kind of reel. It is big and heavy though, comparatively; what you'll get in a Saltist BB is more refined and lighter weight in each class compared to the BG.
I have a BG that I have willingly been torturing for years (loaner and guest reel), and it just keeps on going. The Saltist needs more care, but it has a much smoother retrieve and it's lighter.

I have all BG from the 1500 to 5000. At this price for the saltist, I might bite just to have one. Then again, I'm on the fence.

I've had some epic battles with cocktail sized blues on a very light 7 foot rod and the 3000LT.
