The most common use case was for projector setups. I was just in a Hilton resort whose structured wiring was still sending VGA to their projectora, but they were hanging HDMI to VGA adapters inside the conference desk (not significantly different from the adapters in this deal) to enable connectivity now that HDMI is near universal.

Early on I recall keeping VGA to HDMI adapters for those conference setups which had been built with HDMI structures wiring in case some road warrior came in ready to toss their presentation up on the screen with VGA.

Good luck!

Does anyone know if you can use this to connect a Roku to a monitor without the HDCP warning preventing anything from actually working?

Some HDMI splitters have the unlimited side effect of stripping HDCP, but ensure that you are using these devices in compliance with local regulations.

Not being bidirectional indicates this is exclusively hdmi-vga and can not be used vga-hdmi. I've never heard of anyone using these sorts of adapters for the intention of downscaling or upscaling.

I bought this last week, there is no audio on it so not sure why HDCP matters, but I plugged it into my old roku 2 and got a few free streams to play

Someone with a dual monitor set up, and wants to play SNES emulators on his CRT.

Bought this sort of cable for $1 when Circuit City closed down. Never had the opportunity to use it.
