The most common use case was for projector setups. I was just in a Hilton resort whose structured wiring was still sending VGA to their projectora, but they were hanging HDMI to VGA adapters inside the conference desk (not significantly different from the adapters in this deal) to enable connectivity now that HDMI is near universal.

Early on I recall keeping VGA to HDMI adapters for those conference setups which had been built with HDMI structures wiring in case some road warrior came in ready to toss their presentation up on the screen with VGA.

Good luck!

Yes, but with the adapter the audio signal is simply discarded.

The way this cable is all in your face about not being bi-directional… makes me think it's at least a little bi-curious.

In 2015, the monitor my family had with the HP Core 2 Quad desktop computer started getting lines through it, so I bought the cheapest replacement monitor Best Buy had at the time, a 20" HP W2071D, with a resolution of 1440 x 900, for $85.79 after tax. At the time, the computer's video card had a VGA out and the monitor had a VGA in, so perfect.

When the computer died in 2020, I replaced it with an Acer i5 desktop computer. The video card had two HDMI outs, and that's it. So I got an HDMI to VGA adapter to retrofit the old monitor.

That VGA monitor, to this date, absolutely refuses to die. When it does, I'll gladly buy a new one, and it'll probably be Quad HD. But it's mostly my kids that play that computer, and I feel like going out of my way to get a nicer monitor would only encourage them to play more Roblox.

Being able to split out an audio signal requires more power than what is already coming from the source HDMI port.

The adapters that can do this have an attached power cable, the extra power is usually coming from either an AC wall plug or a USB port.

Also another limitation of cable products like this particular one is that some devices with low-power HDMI output ports (for example, disc players) are not compatible with it; so there is an advantage for a product to have an external power connection.

CRTs had perfect viewing angles, excellent contrast ratios, near perfect color accuracy and extremely fast refresh rates, and they had them 20 years ago. It's sad we as a civilization didn't choose quality over convenience.

Cool cable, I'll get one to throw in the pile. I have a decent Trinitron 19 inch monitor to use with this.

No. I have a super cheap version of this I bought years ago. No cable. It has audio out. I bought it specifically to use with a Chromecast in order to extract audio. This was cheaper than buying a standalone HDMI audio extractor. I needed to short 2 pins on the VGA connection in order for it to work.

So a second gen Chromecast had enough juice to power it up.

Shorting two pin's on the adapter's VGA connector MAY cause problems with other devices. It may work just fine with Chromecast, but it can cause problems with other devices.

The amount of power on HDMI output ports will vary between devices. Including an external power source with the adapter is just good engineering to avoid potential problems.

I have bought a few of these adapters over the years. The ones that do not include a power cable, as part of its design, tend to have more compatibility problems and require some ad-hoc rigging to work with the intended device.

That may be. Shorting the VGA pins was really for my specific case. Obviously you wouldn't do that if you actually need the VGA signal. I was making a Chromecast Audio but with better support. In any case, this cable really should have an audio out if you are connecting it to anything other than a computer and want sound.
