Yes you have to get a phone and a line for Metro and then you can add a tablet for 20 bucks. there are free options for the phone, you have to pay $65 for one month of service, so you end up with a phone and a tablet for $85.

Note that the 128gb also gets 8gb RAM vs 4gb in the 64gb model. Well worth the extra $50.

Isn't everyone and their mothers already have a $20 A9+ courtesy of Metro?

These tablets work fine if all you're doing is some light social media browsing and viewing YouTube. However it does lag when you're trying to do more intensive stuff. It's "ok" to play some light games on it, especially if you close all background tasks. I got it for free with my phone so I don't mind having it around. It actually works great for kids because all they want is YouTube anyway.

Also, I just don't get the people that compare iPads to Android tablets. This $150 tablet is not going to be as good as a $400 iPad mini. Yes, you can get used iPads for less, but you could get like a used android tablet for less as well.

I got an iPad because everyone makes it seem like the best thing since sliced bread, but honestly it's just as underwhelming. While iPads are more powerful and lag less, half the apps don't work properly and are just slightly scaled up versions of their phone apps that don't open in full screen. The bigger iPad you have, the more annoying that is. On the bright side, the iPad battery life is usually much better and it is a consistent experience across all iOS devices.

I personally switched to an open box S8 Ultra that I got for $450 a few months ago and that thing blows any iPad I've used out of the water.

I'm no apple fan and don't own any. However , android has lagged long enough, they caught up with phones 5+ years ago, but when you can snag iPad Air with M1 for $399 and you still need to pay as much PLUS trade in of an expensive tablet, android tablets are a joke. If price didn't factor, I love my Tab S9 OLED, but I paid $90 for it. Id love another one , but don't feel like plunking down nearly $500 for one, plus it's not even as easy as forking over the cash, it's the whole Samsung trade-in game. Don't feel like playing it, then it's a laggy tablet which are NOT fun, even just for emails or Netflix.

Heck, the iPad 9th Gen is now $250 and blows this out of the water. If it weren't for iPhone , I'd jump. I just can't stand using iPhone.

Might just introduce some apple in my life with iPads. I've held out for a decade, but apple has really trashed iPad pricing, despite headlines saying new iPads can top out at $2000+. Performance wise for 99% users, same experience with an iPad of $400 or $2400.
I'm with you. Originally an Android+PC user, switched over to iOS+macOS when I started working at Apple. Initially hated iOS and macOS. The rest of this post won't be about macOS, I basically only used it for work (even at my current job).

As for iOS, eventually just got complacent and stuck with it for a few years even after leaving Apple.

Recently did a bunch of world travel, and wanted to take a cheaper burner android around. Also, got an iPhone 14 pro (US) so needed a phone with physical SIM for travel. Physical SIM for Cheaper, better local service, and often long stays (months at a time). Got a pixel 7. Been using the pixel abroad and the iPhone in the US. Annoyed every time i came back home and had to use the iPhone.

Decided to take the plunge and moved my US service to my pixel 7. Yes, the pixel 7 and iPhone 14 pro are worlds apart, but I just highly prefer the Android UX. Looking to get a higher end Android, when a good sale rolls around. Probably a Galaxy or Pixel.

As for tablets, I've had a few cheap Android tabs years ago (nook, lenovo). Didn't really use any of them much. My mom has had several Samsung tablets, most recently a Galaxy Tab S8+. Fantastic tablet and DEX is really interesting.

The year that I stopped working at Apple, got myself an iPad 7th gen, and over the years, I've been using that tablet consistently mostly as a media machine while traveling or in bed. Over the years, it's become pretty useless for shopping or browsing. Just too underpowered now. I'd of course expect Android tablets even the high end ones like the galaxy tab s series to perform similarly, if not worse.

Recently sold the iPad 7th Gen for $150, though i think i probably could've gotten a bit more for it maybe $200. Really impressed by the resale value. Having bought it for $343, that's like leasing the machine for $35-40/year.

While the Galaxy Tab S8+ is great, I just got myself an iPad Air 11in M2. For my pretty casual use of tablets, I find the iPad to be a much better value.

Price-wise, a new iPad Air 11 in M2 is comparable to the older S8+.
I'll get more years of support on an iPad. I'll get a great resale value when I'm ready to upgrade again.
There are nicer, wider options for things like cases.

But for tablets, I'll have to give it up to iPads. I'd also own an apple watch if it weren't for the walled garden.

Galaxy Tab A series are fine for casual watching and playing casual puzzle games. My mom has had a few of these A series tablets, and she does complain about the lagginess like a year later.

WARNING
It has a TN display. I think I even prefer the display of Amazon Fire Max 11 to this one, let alone OLED.

Save your money and buy a used Tab S7/8. The Lenovo P12 deal would also perform better.

A thing I tried on Samsung site(did for s24 and a9+), chat with customer support and ask if they can offer any discounts. I got additional $55 discount for A9+(no other offers or trade-in though). They create a checkout link(samsung) and you must buy it through the link(samsung) to honor their offer.
Thanks for the tip. This worked for me $120 after tax!

Hah, for sure. Metro ruined A9+ deals, although I'd consider paying extra $50 for the model with more storage and RAM. Too bad this is not even an option.

I am 100% with you. Been using Google/Samsung phones for over a decade now, very much used to the UX. Have iPhone as my corporate / work phone, it's fine, but still like my Android phone better. Tablets though, is something Android ecosystem (IMO) struggles with. If you need something and don't have much cash to spend, $20 A9+ is fine. Otherwise, even base iPad offers much better UX than any Android tablet. It's really a software 'problem' that no amount of excellent Samsung hardware can fix.

Is it me or does Samsung keep producing extremely out of date under powered tablets and continues to do so meanwhile even old entry level iPads are still really snappy ? But then again apples entry level tablet is 2x the price of Samsung. I guess you get what you pay for

My two cents: I bought this and then returned it because the screen is not IPS. While it has a decent refresh rate and is adequate for performance, it was very frustrating that if I moved my head a few inches to the left or to the right or have the tablet at the slightly wrong angle if I was laying down it would have a washed out image. That's the VA panel. If that doesn't bother you, then the rest of the specs are actually pretty good. That was a deal killer for me though.
