If you're using TorGuard VPN, the Mumbai server will not work (apparently Microsoft knows their IP addresses). You'll get the "purchased in a different region from your account" error. However, the Bangalore server works perfectly.
Some other VPNs may also have the same issue. The "purchased in a different region from your account" error typically means you should try connecting to a different city in India or try using a different VPN. It does not mean that you should change your XBox account's region from the US to India, this is never required.

What worked for me was windscribe and completing the redemption process via mobile phone after switching regions under account info from IN to US a couple of times.
Final redemption happened with WiFi off, under US region, with windscribe always set on to India. I tried with Proton on PC and had no luck.
Worth the trouble to get solid deal if you have some time left on your subscription still.
I repeat.. Game Pass Ultimate will NOT go up in price. Stop reading BS from people that don't actually play video games --> IE - all current "reviewers". Put this post on your Calendars a year out.

People don't mind the PSN price increase.. especially just for cloud saves "LMAO". Who's with me? Nobody cares what you do though, use all the VPN's you like.. luckily you can do that, unlike PSN subs right?

My MS account still shows US so I think the country swap only happens if you started your subscription with an India code+India VPN.
