$500 @5% yields $25 after 12 months. I can save up to $70 on my flight this year. That method works if savings rates stay high AND you can wait almost 3 years to fly. In addition, I get 2% back from my credit card anyways for this gift card purchase AND your always at the mercy of the airlines!

I mean, how often are you drawing those card benefits? Southwest scans your bags and you can track them via the app. So bag loss is pretty rare/corrected quickly.

Not saying you'll never use these card benefits, but through all my business and personal travels, I've had zero instances of needing any credit card travel benefits. When you account for the immediate 14% savings, the expected value of travel loss is less. So it's a better deal to "gamble" and gain a guaranteed 14% savings vs. the <1% chance of drawing a credit card travel insurance claim, which are pretty limited. You also subtract from the benefit the 14% savings here, further lowering the CC benefit.

this is a great option if you are about to purchase a ticket, otherwise, put $500 in a high yield savings account and pull from it when you are ready to buy a ticket. plus if you have a 2% back rewards card that $500 ticket is $490
What are you, a banker surfing the slickdeals forums?

That does seem like a better way to save $10 instead of $70.

When using these cards, you'll lose all your benefits and protections that your credit card might have.
You will be the mercy of Southwest decisions.
If you use a portion of the purchase with your credit card, you are still covered.. that's how I always do it.. never had a problem.

Prices on Southwest have increased since they lowered these gift cards. I find better deals with other airliners now, so not worth it to me.
and they are chaging their policies gradually to be like other airlines.

Which policy? Bags are still free to check and still have no change fees as always right?

Yeah, no policy changes like he's talking about. The only potential change could be to eliminate the current boarding process and charging for seat selection. 2 free bags/free cancelation likely won't change anytime soon. Southwest even modified their policies to be more customer-friendly with points or credits not expiring.

That's why you buy fares during their regular Tuesday sales. But it's tough to believe other airlines are much cheaper. Once you add in bag fees + seat selection, that "cheap" top line fare becomes quite expensive on the bottom line. You can get a $70 one way fare on a discount airline, but once you pay for seat selection + bags, it's more than Southwest. And that's before the 14% discount you're getting with these gift cards instantly.

From page 40 of Chase Sapphire Reserve's Guide to Benefits: You and Your Family Members are covered when Your name is embossed on an eligible card issued in the United States, and You charge all or a portion of a Common Carrier fare to Your credit cardAccount and/or rewards programs associated with Your Account.

It looks like car rentals are where the issue comes in where the entire fare must be charged. Airlines, from my reading of this document for this card, partial payment is acceptable.
Awesome! Thanks for the clarification

Seems to go on sale every week

The $450 price is standard (when cards are sold) but $430 is only a few times a year.

Yes. If you purchased online, request a price adjustment via online chat. If you purchased in store, visit customer service in person or try online chat. Price adjustments can be done within 30 days of purchase.

I did exactly this a couple months ago. Online chat credited my credit card for the difference ($20) as I had purchased a couple days prior.

Not true. Did you see it at $430 price last week? Week before? or even last month. I did not.

Was actually cheaper 3 weeks ago at $420.

Pissed I missed that one, as I have a family trip in July. Was about to buy $450 giftcards & tickets yesterday, but decided to wait until this weekend in case Memorial Day sale brought it back.
Not quite as good at $420, but good enough, bought 4, saving me $280 on flights.

Those that have purchased before- how long does it take for email delivery of your giftcards?
