What's the refrigerant in this unit?

I've been looking, but can't find it.

Notable: R-410A refrigerant is currently common in air conditioners and heat pumps. It will be illegal to sell new equipment using R-410A beginning 2025, and the refrigerant is already being gradually phased out. R-410A will be replaced by R-454B or R-32, but you can't use these directly in a unit designed for R-410A.

So expect a lot of good deals on heat pumps... and, if you buy one, expect to pay a lot for refrigerant for repairs in future years if necessary.

It will still be legal to import r-410a for servicing existing equipment, but the allowable import /production will go down steadily.

Heat pump dryers should have inverter-driven pumps that adjust the pressure (and draw) to maintain the desired heat on the hot side (and cold on the evap side to condense the humidity), so they'll be as efficient as a very small mini-split heat pump.

The higher draw is likely to account for startup. After startup, the wattage drawn should be low, albeit for a longer time than conventional electric dryers.

This one says the line should be fused for 15A, even though code requires 30A wiring; see attached photo from user manual.

These dryers are best in tandem with a front-loading washer; modern front-loaders spin the laundry faster/harder, so there's less water in them for the dryer to deal with.

A conventional electric dryer @ 0.12 cents per kwh is about $.50 cents per load. A heat pump dryer on average is about 1/2 the cost per load? Probably a bit less but let's go with that and say .25 cents per load. Most of what I read the saving is more like 28-30% and not 50%

5 loads per week will save you $65 per year. This is if we go with a 50% savings. That's a pretty long ROI. If you pay $1,165 with tax you'll break even in just under 18 years. Will this dryer even last 18 years?

Of course you need to do your own homework and run the numbers but I don't see enough savings to justify the purchase.

at 0.12 cents per kwh you'd have to do some crazy amounts of clothes drying to have paid for itself in any reasonable amount of time. Unless you got a crazy good deal on the Meile.

I suppose coming from a high cost state it changes my perspective, but our average cost is around .40-50 cents / kwh. Don't know anyone who runs it during high usage .70/kwh but the average is good enough for me so the savings start looking better there. Need to point out as well that since this is ventless, you're not taking cold/heated air and jettisoning it out which helps the thermal envelope as well.

All that said, the biggest reason for me to get this comes down to maintenance. I am happy to vacuum condenser coils as part of my monthly house maintenance vs having to deal with vent cleaning. Honestly can't remember the last time my folks did it for theirs despite many reminders, and I am pretty sure that's a good portion of folks. Those service calls add up once things start not working, so I am glad to be saving that with my meager vacuum once a month.

Wow. I thought our energy costs were high. Yikes. Sounds like Hawaii. I'd be searching for alternative ways as well.

Also those that are in need of a new dryer can justify the costs a bit easier. It make little sense to replace a perfectly functioning dryer.

Heat pump dryers and Combo units are relatively new in the US. They have been more common in Europe.

The previous generation of "ventless dryers" are a different beast. They were very slow. But they didn't have a heat pump.

We have a LG combo unit. That thing is amazing. The convenience with an all in one machine is so great. The fact that it doesn't vent air out side the house saves AC costs in summer and heating costs in winter. The machine runs on 110v. Also the fact that it doesn't have the gasket get moldy in a front loading machine is amazing. It does take longer than a electric dryer and washer combined.

The separate dryer alone gets things more dry per YouTube videos than my combo units since they have a larger compressor than the combo units.

I am certain this technology (heat pump) is the wave of the future. As these machines are new, ie less that an year old, the question is the longevity of these generation one units.

You also need to account for the energy cost of venting conditioned air to the outside of your home. Ventless dryers don't have that issue.

The heat stays within your home's thermal envelope. In winter, the additional heat generated by running the heat pump is beneficial.

In summer it's equivalent to running a small space heater with power equal to that of what the dryer's pulling from the wall. You're likely better off that way than you are expelling your cooled air and making up for it with hot, humid outdoor air.
