Love the new heat pump LG dryers. They take a little longer than the conventional dryer to dry, but in return you get much lower power bills and your clothes last longer. They work by removing the moisture more than pure heat. So workout clothing and stuff with elastic last longer. A few years ago they sucked, but the new ones are a lot better. Now get completely dry.

I had an LG ventless model back in like, 2004. It never dried anything 🥲 Just purchased the GE ventless model and WOW! Amazing! My clothes are hot like wasabi! Sure it was twice as much but it is the bomb dot com. So I do hope LG upped their game!

That's not how it works. The refrigerator coils both work on the air within the drum...like a dehumidifier. This removes the water and it is pumped out via the drain. There is an addition electric heater to heat the clothes.

It doesn't work like heat pump water heater. I thought it did also until I got one.

The fact is with a convectional gas or electric dryers - you are exhausted you home air outside. This creates a small vacuum in the home. As a result air from outside leaks in. In summer this increases your cooling costs and in winter this increases you heating costs.

A heat pump model doesn't do this

Think you got it the wrong way around. Fridges and ACs are heatpumps that push the cold air into the fridge/room and exhaust hot air out the back. A heat pump dryer pushes the hot air into the drum (to dry clothes) and the cool air outside. So the room gets cooler, not hotter. A heat pump dryer works more like an air conditioner rather than a heater. I have the GE Profile All in one since Nov 23 and love the convenience.

Right - we used about 4500-5000 watts per load (about 45-60 minutes typical drying time). The specs for this dryer are 240V 830W, but I expect the loads can take two hours, I don't know yet. I am less concerned about the time it takes to make my money back vs. just saving energy overall, but that's me. Sorry it's not exact - my sense didn't detect the dryer but PSE&G shows hourly usage and we'd be in the 4-5kWh range when the dryer ran and now when I look at our usage, the most we use in any given hour is like 1.9kWh around 6-7pm when my wife uses the stove & oven and the basement dehumidifier is running. I'm looking at all of May and I see maybe six hours total for the month so far that hit 1.8kWh per hour. Our baseline household is like 0.4-0.5.

Heat pump dryers are the future even if the two in one units aren't (though the heat pump two in ones will probably make them a lot more popular than they ever have been in the US). Some European countries already banned sales of vented dryers years ago due to their atrocious inefficiency. US will eventually follow someday, and appliance manufacturers know this. That's why they are investing in the technology for the US market in advance. Old school ventless condenser dryers and 5 hour dry times are never going to fly with the average US household, so heat pump systems are the solution.

Drying performance is still going to fall behind a well maintained vented dryer but the difference in efficiency is far more substantial. A good Youtube review of this dryer (from Ben's Appliances) shows that typical clothing loads take roughly an hour and a half and come out completely dry (not damp-dry), and a heavy load like a large comforter will take closer to 2 and a half hours, which is long, but it's also completely dry. Which is more than I can say about basically any dryer I've used that "dried" a comforter in 60-80 minutes but was still damp and needed a second cycle to finish it.

Plus heat pump dryers are more gentle on fabrics since they dry at lower temperatures. At their absolute hottest they don't quite reach medium heat in a vented dryer.


Granted, a possible disadvantage is that heat pump dryers are a lot more sensitive to the surrounding air. If you keep your dryer in the garage, a heat pump dryer is not going to dry very well in the winter due to the cooler surrounding air.

That's a bit of hyperbole. Our LG washer takes 90 minutes to do a "normal" load. Our Samsung heat pump dryer dries that same load in 2 hours. I expect this LG to be better, based on a couple reports here and the fact that it's twice as large. It's nowhere near 5x. And remember when you're "venting out the humid air," the air that goes IN the dryer has to come from inside your house unless you have an intake from the outside. Do you know how much air has to go through a traditional dryer per minute? It's around 230 cu.ft. per minute. How long do you run your dryer each week? You might be surprised how much cool air that traditional dryer is pulling from your house in the summer and how much warm air it's pulling in the winter.

We were building a new house and this was right before the pandemic so prices were a lot better. Also, it keeps the bathroom warmer and reduces envelope penetrations when we were going for a very efficient house build. So easy to just plug it in and go, and it will run both washer and dryer on a single 20A receptacle (although that doesn't meet code).

Rates were close to 30cents and just dropped a bit this year. Realistically, the extra 400-500 for the dryer will take a bit to pay back but its an awesome machine! also the washing machine with the automatic dispensing detergent is sweet!

I agree, but we're actually in the 2nd or 3rd generation already (they've been available in Europe since the late '90s) and they'll only get better, just as heat pump systems are becoming more and more popular in Maine and Alaska now that they can still draw heat from the outside air even in negative temperatures. Pretty wild.

At $549 it's an easier decision to go with one. Great deal.

It's not possible to cool a room without a vent or heat exchange with the outside, there is no such thing is 'creating cold' - thermodynamically impossible. If the dryer uses 830W it will heat your room at a rate of 830W. A heat pump just moves heat from A to B, much like a thermoelectric cooler (albeit more efficient).

The way this dryer works is that the heat pump is entirely inside the air loop. Air is blown over the hot side (think the outside coils of your fridge, or outside unit of your ac), warms it up, which lowers the relative humidity of the air, and then blows it over the clothes. The air is now warm and humid. The warm humid air is then blown over the cool coils of the other side of the heat pump. This cools down the air, it hits its dew point, and water condenses on the coils.

Note that all of this happens inside the dryer, but of course running a heat pump takes energy - in this case about 800W. All of that energy ends up in your room as heat (feel the top and sides of a heat pump dryer, they are warm).
