Was looking at specs for another item and saw this. x4 is DAC (USB sound card) + AMP (headphone amp). You do not need anything to run this other than a free USB-A port which provides data input as well as power to the unit. Can handle up to 600ohm headphones.

I run a soundblaster ae-5 plus and sundara closed backs, but this is perfect for my work desktop. btw this also has sb x-fi, which is proprietary virtual surround where you use the phone app to scan your head and then it adjusts sound to mimic what you would hear if you were in a 5.1 or 7.1 surround environment.

would this DAC provide better sound quality compared to the onboard audio on the B650E-F motherboard?

It will certainly provide you with more control over how the audio is managed - but obtaining better sound quality js really dependent on a variety of other factors (your output device, the quality of the source audio...).

Honestly, if you are asking if this device will benefit you instead of checking specs yourself it's probably not going to help you. And that's 100% OK!! There is no reason to waste money on stuff you don't need.

Oh nostalgia. How I miss installing the latest sound blaster card and having to deal with all the fun IRQ conflicts etc.

The ALC4080 on the B650E-F (and others) is well known for its issues. Even a $8 Apple USB-C DAC would be an improvement.

But in regards to this DAC, I have no idea. I haven't bought anything from Creative in over a decade.

Edit: I guess this one has driver issues as well. Creative never changes...

I was cheap - bought the Pro Audio Spectrum on sale. I remember having to jump through all sorts of hoops to get it to work well with Dune II, and later, the original Warcraft, plus a bunch of other DOS games.

I remember I watched my dad struggle get a PAS 16 to work, and we got it because it also had scsi for a 2x caddy cdrom. But when it finally did start working, it was amazing.

OP should also add that the G6 is on sale for the very same price using that coupon. The two devices are neck in neck with features.

How would something like this compare to a OBJECTIVE2+ODAC COMBO? I have Sennheiser HD6XX headphones. I've had my O2DAC for some time now but am curious as to how it compares to something like this or maybe the AE 7 or AE 9? I forgot to mention that I mainly play pc games like FPS and do listen to music as well.

I dunno. I have the ae 5 plus. I use it with most of the features turned off. The sound is a bit better than my previous which was asus xonar se (which is about the same as the sound on a high end motherboard) plus a schiit headphone amp.

I don't really like the sbx effects in games but in movies and music it is fun to play with. 90% of the time I keep it in direct mode, which means no processing whatsoever.

But the sb x-fi in this x4 is intriguing to me. It requires you to literally scan your head and ears with the sb phone app. Then it configures 5.1 or 7.1 sound (ie you set your speaker system to 7.1 while playing Witcher 3, or in movies) and x-fi configures the sound to closely mimic what your ears would hear if you had real 7.1. it's supposed to work very well, guess I'll find out

I still remember going to Babbage's and getting our first CD ROM (with Encarta) and the pack in sound blaster 16!
