Well they've been around for 15+ years so far so there is that. I had 2 drives fail on the 5 year mark, on the month, and they refunded me for both since they no longer stocked what I had. That's excellent customer service.

What does "certified refurbished" mean? Is there a trusted third-party doing certification? And what exactly is certified?

I was curious, so I went to look at the item auction to find another gem:
"We are confidence that to honor another 5 Years Warranty from these hard drives!
Buy with confidence & Worry Free!"
They just wipe the data. There's no actual refurbishment of the hardware like replacing the motor bearings or refilling the helium. You're buying a used hard drive that's been used in data centers for 5 years and they are more than half way through their typical life.

Could TCO be offset with lower energy cost for higher density? 6x 10gb vs 4x 14gb over 3 years.

The Allstate warranty actually says "Certified Refurbished" qualifies for a 2 year warranty.

For drives, certified refurbished means nothing other than someone hopefully ran a app to test the sectors. I assure you, they did not disassemble the drive, replace bad parts, then reassemble, which is what actual refurbishment is.

Assume it means, some of them will fail, and that their "certification" simply means, they'll likely send a replacement, *IF* it fails soon after purchase.

I'm not saying don't buy them. I've bought plenty like this and generally had good results, but ignore the words "certified refurbished" when it comes to harddrives. It's horse shit, at best.

You also have to factor that bigger drives tend to be younger.

I use these as cold storage so energy doesn't matter, just convenience.

If leaving on 24/7 I'd go bigger, but someone else can do the math ;D

5 year warranty on what? The drive? What good does a new drive do if you lost all your data?
