At least ill be able to buy some walmart gift cards on walmart.com. That way i can use them when i need to rather then during those 3 months. Walmart gift cards come in Handy during Black friday and also can be used at Sams Club
Somehow I find my Amex to be useless. They don't have any good deals. Most of the merchant offers they usually have is from boutique stores we never shop from. Their points back are slim as well. Only reason I keep the Amex card is because of their paid $25 car rental insurance. It's an excellent insurance to buy when renting a car.

I asked why and they said it was to make sure I wasn't falling for the "buy a giftcard and send me the gifcard card info scammers".
How would that prevent someone from falling for the scam just because their ID was checked? Maybe it's just their "nice" excuse instead of saying "to protect our asses in case you're a scammer or stealing from us".

Yeah, probably but in their defense, I think it was more or less that they just didn't understand why they had a sudden spike in one specific type of giftcard sale. They weren't impolite or anything during the process, and after I explained why they're seeing it, it was never an issue.

But the whole, buying giftcards for scammers is absolutely a thing. There's lots of elderly around here that are susceptible those types of scams.

of course they were nice and polite but imagine what would have happened if you said "no thanks, i'd rather not provide my ID; i prefer to remain anonymous" then you would get pushback. after you explained, you're lucky they didn't tell you that you were committing a crime like money laundering or structuring. i was once told buying a gc with a credit card was illegal.

Walmart credit card has 5% cash back every day on orders that you ship or pick up. Underrated card.
Yep, that's why this announcement is pretty disappointing for me. Especially since I already use discounted gift cards for grocery stores (or 6% Amex). I guess the upside is I can get it on the rare in-store Walmart purchases, plus use the 5% rewards to get bigger discounted gift cards....moving slightly towards slick doing that.

Yes, I did it last year, basically $1,300 of my $1,500 spend at my grocery store was for GCs (the rest was actual groceries) and the only issue I had was, I guess my grocery store got suspicious of the sudden increase in Amazon giftcard sales and started to check IDs for all giftcard sales. I asked why and they said it was to make sure I wasn't falling for the "buy a giftcard and send me the gifcard card info scammers". I LOL'd but it made sense for them to check.

Chase had it in Q1 this year and I did it then too, no issues.

How would checking your ID ensure that you weren't buying a gift card to send the info to scammers?

Seriously asking, not being snarky.

dont buy all at one. Buy what you need each month so you can save more with HYSA. Unless you need to spend 1.5k at once.
Good point.

I think I'm just going to wait until September (after my billing period ends that month) to buy $1500 in gift cards from WM, that way the $1500 says in my HYSA for the longest amt of time 👍

Now I just need to figure out who to buy gift cards for - walmart? amazon? I get 5% off gift cards at target (except target gift cards, of course), which is better than 5% back, so it wouldn't make sense to buy any gift cards that I can also get from target. Guess that just leaves Walmart.

I'm not entirely sure but checking the ID would prevent a stolen card potentially being used by a thief. Yeah, fine it might be a family member with a different last name but safer for the store to just be safe even in that case. A lot of the people who fell victim to those scams were kids so they might have stolen a parent's or grandparent's card. The store basically wanted to make sure I was buying the gift card for myself or intentionally as a gift.

Also looking back at some of the post by some other SDers to my comment, I honestly didn't think this was a huge deal on the store's part. Some minimum wage paid, 20 year old isn't gonna go full private eye over what was probably something a store manager saw was an anomaly in giftcard purchases which coincided with local news stories about the giftcard scams at the time. I never felt hassled by it and once I told them why I was buying it, they never bothered with it again...

$1500 HYSA assuming at 5% will earn $75 before income taxes for the first year. Since you're talking about tie up money in 3 months , $75/4 = $18.75. after federal/state taxes , you're looking at a delta of $15........

If I get gas from a walmart gas station, does that count towards walmart purchases?

1 year in-store with Walmart Pay but "forever" on orders for shipping or store pickup.
