When you say "at the lake", do you mean throwing it in the water so it gets water logged? I still have an original Nerf Whistler from the 90s that's been used and abused for decades in dry conditions and the whistles haven't fallen out... Just wondering if this is a problem with these newer ones or maybe just a water exposure issue?

Yes, in the lake. We were waist deep so it was getting logged. Fins and whistle all busted off.
