2 pieces of advise.
Stick to traditional tanks when they are having $1/gal sales.
And
Dont get 10 gallon tank, don't fall for "starter tank, easy small size" scam. It's more difficult to deal with smaller tanks, harder to maintain and balance, also less room for fish. Start with at least 20 gallon tank. You will tank me when it's time to weekly water changes.

I learned a lot from slickdeals.net and fish forums, and I will always tell everyone never get 10 gallon tank, don't rush into putting your fish in there, get yourself a water test kit.
Whatchu talkin' bout Willis???
Lots of things affect water chemistry including fish waste, so I'll use it as an example. Waste gives off ammonia and ammonia is toxic to fish in high concentrations. So when a fish poops in the water, the ammonia added to your water it a greater percentage of 5 gal than it is of 20 gal.

Same applies to anything that messes with tank chemistry. Dead fish, rotting excess fish food from over feeding, new decoration, new fish, even change in room temperature of the room the tank is in, and on and on and on… Getting water right is a balancing act. Smaller tanks tip one way or the other quickly from any small change. The larger the tank the slower the tip and the more time you have to correct an issue before it kills all your fish.

The fact that you used a plural here asks so many questions, none of which are appropriate on the SD forums.

Still have the tank from petco on the last deal. Seems like they have deals on their tanks at least once a year.

These tanks don't seem to be rated the greatest.

The reviews are pretty scary. Also, why is it that so many tanks are so tall rather than long. Makes them a PITA to clean and less room to have diverse decor and hiding spaces, which is really important for territorial fish in communities.

Save space especially if you live in a tiny apartment. Not everyone is living in a big house.

Judging by the number of downvotes, seems like you are the one who is not appropriate on SD

You can have floting hiding spots and play things etc, some even attach to the sides

Can I use this for a salt water setup If I get a good skimmer and filter?

Saltwater fish are very sensitive to water parameter changes. A small tank can suddenly shift and is not near as forgiving as a larger tank that shifts slower. In the hands of a well experienced person it would still be challenging (though not impossible)

That's an exception, although bettas might be fine with even 5gal, even then that's an exception. For example 10 gallons make great habitats for red eared sliders or other reptiles, but for fish tank, it's so much easier to maintain 20 gallon or bigger tanks. Also do yourselves a favor, if anyone knows any plumbers or if you are moving to a new house, get a drain and cold water line extended near your tank... Dream come true! No buckets needed.. Smilie
