Would this be overkill / have too much power consumption for an unraid server?

I know the hate for Asus now. I've had the Z690i for 2+ years , swapped it for z790i but after few weeks , promptly returned, and reinstalled z690it. It's been one of the better, reliable mobo in a long time, fantastic performance, build, and zero quirks.

Initially had it in H1 case with arc770 for first year and great. But had to upgrade GPU, so it's been in a full ATX, and incredible still. Kinda relief having all that room , previously never thought of ITX in an ATXcase but it has it advantages.

Have also z790 hero, and can't say the same for it.

Awesome deal, having in mind that this mobo alone goes for around $250 regularly. I know this can be updated to run intel 13, but can it be updated to run the 14th gen?

Edit: Yes, it can.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

I purchased this combo (but with RAM for ~$60 more) a couple months ago for a sff formd T1 build. Ended up returning it because this mobo is incompatible with most AIOs and air coolers on the market due to the stacked NVME drive design.

The return process was extremely easy and I received a complete refund. Just wanted to post to bring awareness to those who are considering this combo - make sure to do extensive research to confirm your cooling solution is compatible.

no onboard graphics on this chip if you want transcoding. I have a gaming PC in my living room for media and playing console type games on my TV, in my den I have a desktop gaming system, a flight simulator cockpit and a motion racing simulator as well as my old gaming PC is running my torrent server and a Synology NAS Stick Out Tongue a in another room a PC setup to run TGC 2019 ( golf simulator ) and I don't turn any of those PC's off ever. They do go to sleep in left for some time but never turn off. PC's running don't cost that much IMO.

TLDR: if you want a low power option build a Jonsbo mini ITX system or buy an off the shelf NAS. My Synology 5 bay uses 65 watts which is way less than any PC will be using!
Core i7-12700KF alone has a TDP of 125 W, double the entire Synology system! and we haven't talked about drive and graphics and motherboard power yet!

FYI you can edit the combo deal to pick the 12700k, it has the same flat dollar amount discount as the 12700kf. It is just like $20 or so more for the non-kf model.

Tempting especially since it's ITX, but with NPU on the horizon and I already have an 11th gen i9, I'll just wait for the slew of new CPUs coming. Especially since these require me to buy new DDR5 RAM instead of using my DDR4.

I've had many different Asus products throughout the years. All of them failed at an early age. Motherboards and monitors. Customer service is horrible. Made up my mind I will never buy another Asus product no matter what kind of deal it is.

Good point about the kf model and no iGPU that is important if transcoding. The regular k model is available with the same MB for like $20 more.

TDP really has nothing to do with how much average power a system is using. Not sure what a Jonsbo mini ITX build has to do with power consumption either. 12700k is certainly overkill for most Unraid use cases but if using a lot of VMs it can be well suited for the job and not really be a power hog.

I use a 12600k for Unraid and have a Windows VM so I can use my Unraid server as a game console simultaneously. If I had a 12700k for the same system, I would have assigned more cores to the VM for a bit better gaming performance.
