This CPU is 7 years old. I'm sure it'll perform great especially with 32GB of RAM but personally I'd much rather buy something newer and relatively future-proof as you never no what requirements upcoming OS or other software will have.

My CPU (i7-4790) was 7 years old when Windows 11 released in 2021. Still performs great but it's not compatible with Windows 11 and I continue using Windows 10 but only have 1 year left before Win 10 reaches end-of-life and no more security updates and which point I will need to upgrade my hardware (I am aware that there are workarounds to force a Win 11 install but do not want to do that and I can easily afford an upgrade and would want the benefits of new hardware anyway).

Definitely not the most power efficient NAS you could possibly build these days, but it's cheaper than a Synology box. I would definitely install Proxmox on it and then run your NAS in a container, though. There's plenty of power left over for it to host other things.

If you go on AliExp, there's ITX NAS boards with an embedded Intel CPU that have 6 or more SATA ports and use 12V DC power supplies.

They also have full size NAS boards with up to 10 SATA ports and 4x 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, meaning you could potentially have a really powerful router, NAS, and Plex server all in one machine that costs about half of what a dedicated NAS and router would run you.

That's a legacy price meant to gouge.

For $180, you can just about buy a 14th Gen i3 and a motherboard that will give this 8700 a run for its money while using a fraction of the electricity.

However, that's not to say that in total, you can do much better than $300 for a complete system.

CPU alone costs 180 on Amazon

This would be great for home office if you don't need to be mobile. Or else get a Laptop.

indeed i'm rocking my 4790k and I've never actually overclocked it lol, there's so much more headroom on it because I can definitely OC it at least 20%

I would not use this as a NAS server for the sole reason that the case can only house 2x 3.5" drives.

Agree - I do all my consulting work on a 4770 with 20gb ram and gtx1060. It's more than capable of running office, zoom, teams calls, and multiple remote desktops across 3 monitors without any lag.

It runs cs2 at 140+ fps at the lowest settings 1080p. At this point any modern GPU will be bottlenecked by the slow ram and slow processor but it's still capable.
