"Chinese cedar" does not equal what most think of for cedar (red cedar or western red)

If you get the standard Cedar I would recommend going down to home depot and buying Behr's version of stain. It has a sealing that will make something like this last years instead of fade from the elements in a year or 2. Stain it before assembly . it's perfectly clean and the stain will go on easy with no prep.

While I don't doubt that, we've had a "cheap cedar" herb planter sitting outside for 3 years now that's doing just fine. From Lidl. The base was garbage and fell apart (not the cedar, the nylon that held it together), but the planter part is fine and has thyme and oregano growing right now.
