Kona side of the Big Island is by far my favorite in all of Hawaii.
1. Rent a condo in Kailua-Kona from someone like konacoastvacations.com to save Airbnb/VRBO fees.
2. Restaurants and bars on Alii Drive stay open till at least 9, couple much later.
3. Stock up at Costco and Target, avoid overpriced supermarkets.
4. Don't miss the night manta ray dive - scuba or snorkel. Bit pricey but well worth it.

Big Island is a bit different than say Oahu/Honolulu. It's a bit more rural, hiker friendly (one of the few places in the world with a green sand beach) and sports an active volcano to check out. Because of the volcano, some of the scenery can be somewhat "Wasteland-ish." I felt like everything closes at 7/8pm. I don't know about staying (because the price is outrageous) but i'd check out the four seasons and roam around like you have a room there.

General Hawaii tip, go to a farmer's market. There's usually exotic fruits you don't usually get.

Big Island is big. See to Volcano National Park and sight seeing scenic drive. Don't expect to see lavish beaches like in Oahu or Maui.

Mauna Kea was the most spectacular beach. We didn't stay at the hotel on the beach but i wish we would have.

Farmers markets in Big Island is a ripoff. Mango $4 EACH (mind you, there are mango trees with thousands of mango each tree everywhere). I have a feeling if I grow 10 mango trees, I'd be a millionaire in one season. Pineapple $8 each. And I'm not talking about the white pineapple which is $15 each! Here in Cali, you can get one for a dollar when it's on sale.
Almost all farmers market sellers (who sell fruits) are Filipino and they all have the same fruits and sell them at exactly the same price

To be fair, I feel most farmers markets (especially here in CA) have been infiltrated by big businesses and people trying to scam a buck (so it's not just Hawaii nor are they immune to it). Case in point, I was just at the mountain view Farmers market, seeing Cherries for $9/lb! They're fresh in Brentwood for $4 (which is generally more expensive than Safeway). However, I noticed things like Longans, dragonfruit, rambutan looking much fresher than what we could get here. There was giant avocado bigger than my fist. And it makes sense because the climate and soil in Hawaii is much more preferable and mineral rich.

You are correct in that you should be aware of people taking advantage, but unique produce is what makes big island special.

Night manta ray dive is one of my favorites of all time. I was so chill I got like 90 minutes on the tank. Calms me down just thinking about it.

I've noticed bay area people in general are stupid with their money--full msrp for cars or more, bathroom remodels in the deep 5 figures, 100k to remodel a kitchen, grocery prices gouged 24x7--and no one bats an eye and thinks its normal and think everywhere else in the world sucks to live even if they've never been out of the bay. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) Most won't bat an eye to hawaii gouging saying 'its the price to pay to be here' or some other such nonsense...

Fortunate you were able to stay down that long; several operators end dive after 60 minutes, regardless of air consumption.

damn, come for deals, get an extra dosing of judgy douchbaggery comments. Shitty financial decisions aren't just relegated to Bay Area folks. That being said, it's their money. They can do whatever they want with it. If they wanna blow it all on coke, let them be.
