Snagged one. Thanks OP. I have a 4th gen (1080p) that won't default audio to HomePod to replace.

whats the purpose of higher storage in apple tv? Just curious.
Retroarch enables emulation of older consoles. Maybe you could store roms

lol no - Verizon had this for sale for $75 almost to the day last year. And its been $100 at Sams and Costco between then and now. Mark isn't wrong.
Just went back to see if what you say is true and nope,

That was $75 for the 2nd Gen Apple TV 4K, so the model previous to this one.

This $89 deal is the best deal there's ever been for this model to date. It's never been less.

Any downside to using an Apple TV as an Android/Google user? I'd use it just to stream Netflix/Amazon Video/Apple TV/etc, cast YouTube from my Pixel, watch YouTube TV during football season, and stream stuff from my media server using Emby. Don't need any smart home integration.

Currently using a cheap Roku 4K TV for my bedroom TV and it's laggy as hell. I want to get a slightly nicer, bigger TV but built-in OS's are usually pretty slow except on higher end TV's. Also this is half the price of a Nvidia Shield.

I don't know what the downside is as an android user but I can tell you I've tried every streaming box and this Apple TV is better than all of them. Super clean interface, good remote. Fast. Don't bother with anything else if I'm honest with you.

Agreed. The thread support is nice to have.
HomePod mini acts as thread hub also

I'm kinda stoked about retroarch on apple.. I ordered one of these. At this price, if a new model comes out soon, I will just move this unit to the bedroom.

Any reason to upgrade from the older 4k version?
Not really unless you want the new remote.

What's the benefit of using this vs. the built in apps on my TV?

I'm using a Samsung S89C TV and Samsung Q990C soundbar.

is this really a poor choice (as google search results indicate) for watching youtube? i would like to get this but if it's not better for youtube than my tv's app…
YouTube looks much better via my TV's built-in YT app for some reason. First off, the ATV YT app very often downscales vids--playing 4K vids in 1080p or even 480p! I'm constantly having to go into the YT settings and putting the resolution back to 4K. But even if I play the same exact video in 4K, it'll look a lot sharper via my TV's app than on the ATV. It sucks and it's a PITA! I have a Sony Bravia btw.

So I checked and 3rd gen does not have App Store. So you can't download apps, correct? I mean you could stream from your phone but wanted to convert my semi dumb tv to a smart ertv!
You're confusing the 3rd Gen AppleTV from ~2012 with this 3rd Gen AppleTV 4K from 2022. The former does not have an App Store, but all current models do.

Details on all versions of Apple TV 4K.

I have all versions of the Apple TV 4K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Gen… basically all do the same thing. Differences lie in the remotes and the modes of charging for those said remotes. Only 4th Gen has USB-C remote control charging… 4th GEN differs with memory options 64 gig is Wi-Fi only 128 gig is Wi-Fi plus ethernet and thread support (which as previously mentioned in this thread is available on the HomePod mini and HomePod 2nd GEN) … quick FYI, the third GEN still offers thread support on both models & exactly the same new remote as 4th Gen, just with Lightning Charging port… and last simple benefit with which I use the most, the fourth GEN Apple TV 4K HDR+ has a Find My remote feature… It's not exactly with a U1/ U2 chip, The software engineers found a way to incorporate a general Find My based upon the Bluetooth location of the remote through the remote app on the iPhone. A lot of detail there but for those who need to know. Finally keep in mind Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen & 4th Gen are the only versions with the new silver remote. (It's been debatable if you have young children who wanna play games that the previous remote, the skinny black one with the touch and click interface has better ability options, which may or may not interest you because of the gyroscopes in that particular version) … finally the fourth GEN Apple TV 4K features HDR10+ (3rd Gen features HDR10) … the HDR 10+ 128 GB with IOT support is my favorite of all because it supports my new Samsung QD-OLED… since Samsung does not have Dolby Vision, just Dolby Atmos. But for you LG guys, Dolby Vision is supported on the 4th GEN… it should be supported on the third GEN, but don't quote me on that. I'm not sure.

I know it was a post, but it's the most informative I could share with my SD family!

Have a good one guys!
