I don't want to threadcrap on what would otherwise be a killer deal, but I have read there is a potential security issue with these cheap Office licenses. Allegedly the overarching organization that is registered with Microsoft could potentially have access to your data, based on the way these particular licenses work. If you aren't at all concerned about that, go for it. It's what's kept me from pulling the trigger over the years.

Because you know who Microsoft is. You have no idea the person or persons behind the registered organization, or THEIR intentions, if in fact they have access.

sorry, could you explain how the organization would access data? isnt this local copy of office and not office 360?

FWIW, I just bought a license and installed it on my Mac. The "About" screen says it's a retail license. Since it's not a corporate or volume license, this shouldn't be an issue.

This is incredibly incorrect. Everyone gets their own key. They are just a retailer lol

The best comparison for your theory is that you only buy your phones at Apple.com, b/c if you bought it at Best Buy, then Best Buy will be able to access your logs/phones.

just a heads up that i have been using the 2019 MacOS (on Sonoma) version for years and am no longer eligible for updates since october 2023 (version office 16.78'ish).

I would be willing to bet these are keys from Microsoft's Home Use Program which allows employees of partner companies to purchase discounted copies of Office. I used to buy them all the time. Probably safe but also likely a license violation.

I thought they discontinued the full licensed editions and now only offer low discounts on the Office 365 yearly subscription instead.

I miss the big discount on the old standalone licenses.
