I have a master's in engineering and teach technical math at the local college. I'm my opinion, TI scientific calculators are overpriced garbage. Their graphing calculators are great, but they scientific ones lag way behind similar models.

Personally, I love my Sharp W535. It's more expensive than this, but can even do exact derivatives for calculus. I haven't used my TI-89 in years, mostly because the Sharp can do everything I need without all the trade-offs of having to lug around a full graphing calc.

This one, even at $12, seems to be a great alternative, as well. The fact that it can do matrix operations puts it 2-3 tiers above the TI-30.

Keep in mind that some math teachers can be quite unpleasant if a student chooses a calculator other than what they recommend. I suggest that you check with the teacher before buying something different. I've seen colleagues refuse to help students who were using a different calculator, and even one who accused a student of cheating because the calculator the student was using had more functionality they didn't teach in class (that professor was a moron). Also, using a different calculator means your daughter won't get the same level of help. If there's something she is having trouble with on her calculator, the teacher might not have the experience with that calculator to help troubleshoot.
Most likely not, as the teacher goes along with functions on the same texas calculator. You're daughter might have some difficulty following along (talking from my high school days)

Neither better nor worse. Just personal preference and the teachers are probably more used to HP/Ti calculators in the US.

Not for CS classes but you'll still need it for other core classes like physics/chemistry/statistics.

The issue you may run into is that classes have the tendency to teach to the calculator they recommend.

Don't let the A-F letters fool you. It doesn't do hexadecimal.

FWIW the Ti-30x are typically allowed on standardized tests.

always get what the teacher / scchool recommends, i made the mistake by getting my son a "better" graphics calculator, had to buy the one my school recommended and sold of the oone i bought at a steep loss on ebay. so just go with what they say regardless of features etc..
