Personally, I love my Sharp W535. It's more expensive than this, but can even do exact derivatives for calculus. I haven't used my TI-89 in years, mostly because the Sharp can do everything I need without all the trade-offs of having to lug around a full graphing calc.
This one, even at $12, seems to be a great alternative, as well. The fact that it can do matrix operations puts it 2-3 tiers above the TI-30.
Keep in mind that some math teachers can be quite unpleasant if a student chooses a calculator other than what they recommend. I suggest that you check with the teacher before buying something different. I've seen colleagues refuse to help students who were using a different calculator, and even one who accused a student of cheating because the calculator the student was using had more functionality they didn't teach in class (that professor was a moron). Also, using a different calculator means your daughter won't get the same level of help. If there's something she is having trouble with on her calculator, the teacher might not have the experience with that calculator to help troubleshoot.
