Green drives are low power. Good for everyday sorts of tasks.

Blue are also general use drives but can handle larger files easily.

Black is basically faster, more premium version of blue.

Red is for NAS, they're optimized for multiple people reading and writing to the drive at once.

Purple has very low write speeds and higher read speeds, used with surveillance software that will always only be writing to the drive at the speed the camera can capture.

Gold is like red, but beefier in specs and design, designed for heavy use of multiple users in enterprise environments.

I wouldn't buy hard drives (especially, though it's a good general rule for anything else) from newegg.

Customer disservice, high probability of getting screwed if you get a DOA / quickly defective product, very possible problems with damage in transit vs. shipping & packaging, etc.

Direct from WD / whoever, probably a better choice.

Or somewhere with a defective item return policy that doesn't cost you shipping / fee money and involve a lot of hassle.

So, I have a pair of RED NAS drives in my Synology at the moment but need to start thinking about upgrading them. I'm starting to run out of space, they are 4TBs but could I use these BLUE ones in my Synology, I know they aren't RED which are made of "NAS" but I mean it's just me and my local home network accessing the drives? Do I really "NEED" drives that are for a NAS environment or would these BLUEs be sufficient, thanks for the help!

If you're certain that the drives are never going to be in a high traffic environment, and you're making sure to have additional backups of important data, then sure.

Just here to 2nd this. Newegg = no buy for me. These deals are great for getting Amazon, Best Buy, Micro Center, etc. to price match though.

Using 2 of these wd blues in my Nas for the last couple of years. No issue at all. You do not need red drives.

Back before COVID, we used to have those 8TB EasyStore drives with reds inside to shuck. Is that still a thing or is there a differ recurring deal to watch out for?

I don't know man, that was 5 years ago now. I feel like the more time goes by the less suckable anything is. The datahoarder subreddit will probably have the answer you're looking for.

Please put newegg in title so most of us can skip by this one. Their packaging is not that good from past experiences.

WD discontinued the Green line many years ago. Those drives were then sold under the Blue label. The true WD Blue line effectively ended at 1TB. Where did you get the idea the Purple has very low write speeds? Hard drives generally have similar speeds for sequential reads and writes.

Breakdown of the lines:

Blue - Consumer grade. Low performance, quiet.

Black - Performance consumer / prosumer. The price/performance ratio basically renders this line pointless.

Red - NAS. Designed for 24/7 use but not the highest workload. Supports TLER (Time-Limited Error Correction).

Purple - DVR/NVR. Designed for continuous reading/writing, with minimal error correction. Quiet.

Gold/Ultrastar - Enterprise class. Designed for 24/7 use, with the highest workload. Fast and loud. Supports TLER.

What's good for archiving? I'm assuming blue because it can handle larger files
For archiving, the only one I'd avoid is Purple. I'm not sure what you mean about Blues being able to handle larger files.

In recent years, I've had much worse experiences with Amazon than Newegg. With Amazon, you're lucky if they send you the right item and it's not someone's opened/emptied return. When possible, I prefer Micro Center or B&H Photo.

I ordered four directly from WD in December or so and they came spread out in a 10-slot foam HDD holder thing in a box. It was amazing. I kept it to store old HDDs.

NewEgg used to be the only place I'd mail order PC components. That was years ago. It's gone down hill.. Far down the hill... fast...
