This is a good guitar at a good price. It is made in Mexico, not Bethlehem PA, and the sides and back are high-pressure-laminate rather than solid wood. Basically, Martin investigated every way they could use cheaper components while retaining tone, playability, and structural integrity. They've done a good job here. Another note, you won't get a hardshell case with this, but it does include a soft case. Take good care of it (easier than with better guitars because the HPL construction is less sensitive to environmental changes (heat and humidity)), and when it comes time to upgrade you will likely get most of your money back. Repped!

This is a good guitar at a good price. It is made in Mexico, not Bethlehem PA, and the sides and back are high-pressure-laminate rather than solid wood. Basically, Martin investigated every way they could use cheaper components while retaining tone, playability, and structural integrity. They've done a good job here. Another note, you won't get a hardshell case with this, but it does include a soft case. Take good care of it (easier than with better guitars because the HPL construction is less sensitive to environmental changes (heat and humidity)), and when it comes time to upgrade you will likely get most of your money back. Repped!

Actually your comment sparked a thought.. after checking reverb the average used sale price over the last 6 months for a "mint" condition one of these is $456 usd. So to your point, basically break even if pricing holds.

I'm honestly surprised its not easier to make a basic molded hard case, plastic injection rather than the cloth bags.

I'd kill to have this as a first guitar, mine was a horrible fender. I guess things got a lot more competitive. One of the better starter guitars back 20 years ago was ovation, great tone for the plastic back and it was more durable.

I bought the top Taylor when I got out of college, now I don't have to worry about upgrades.

I've always found it hard to sell guitars, but it being a Martin, probably one of the better ones to possibly break even. That's their used prices, usually you don't get that high selling privately.

These aren't great. The HPL sides are one thing, but the issue with a lot of these happen to be with the poor quality control on the ribs that are used to stick the top to the sides. They sound half decent when there are new strings on but very quickly sound more wanting. I sent mine back to Martin for warranty work a year or two after owning it as the neck kept bowing horribly. I'd say you're better off with a Taylor with this sort of construction. Pre covid, these were $500.

HPL body is a somewhat distinct voicing, kinda compressed sounding. I would concur regarding the build quality issues. Be careful not to leave these (or any guitar) in a hot car or trunk. Had one completely separate at the seams. The playability of Martins seems to be hit or miss straight from factory. Chances are you would need a setup to improve the action. For $150 more you can get a full solid wood body going to the Martin jr line (improvement in tone and projection). Different form factor, but easier to play given the shorter scale length and smaller dimensions.

I have this guitar. It is ok. The sound is a bit hollow, you can get better sound at this pricepoint with a Guild or Yamaha. I'd look for a Taylor 214 CE on FB marketplace. I picked one up used for $550 (guy had it listed at $700) and is great.


I have a small Martin collection, including a D-28, D-35 and 000-18. Love them all.

Picked this Martin up to keep at my cabin year-round and to play outside at the lake and campfire. It is ok for the price.

How would you say this compares to the Epiphone J-45 in terms of overall quality?
I can't quite afford the Gibson J-45 yet but I was looking at the Slash model Epiphone. I don't want a "beginner" guitar but I also don't need a premium overpriced one. I want something that is built well, sounds good, and will last.
