it appears these are MERV 12 from the reviews, I don't see it listed in the specs or in the pic, or I'm just blind.

I usually use MERV 8 for home, these are a bit on the higher rating side that might cause stress on your HVAC according to the tech, I'm not an expert

just be careful, higher merv that doesn't mean better. think of your system especially if it's older. i almost bought a new system. found out my system cant handle merv 13 and my system is choking, it struggles after putting the filter within 3 weeks. i would use lower merv like 8.

I usually buy these from Amazon Warehouse for under $30 a pair. I think higher Merv filters are less of a problem when they have deep pleats like this. 1" filters would cause a lot more issues.

How did you find out that your system couldn't handle a higher merv rating?

If you mean a 1" filter with the same MERV rating you're right but if you mean a lower rated MERV that's not always the case and without checking airflow or pressure drop comparing the two it would be hard to say. Best scenario is use a MERV 8 and use an air purifier in the rooms you want cleaner air. A MERV 8 protects the equipment well and provides basic filtration which is all you need at the furnace. Many companies throw in a 4" filter rack and couldn't explain the refrigeration cycle to you if you offered them $500. My point is don't just assume a 4" rack means your system will handle a high MERV 4" filter.

My system's recommended filter is Aprilaire 213 which is a 4" merv13. It is also $50 a piece and lasts may be 3 months?
So my filter chokes my hvac, is expensive and lasts just as long as cheaper 1" filters
Doesn't make sense. Anyone with insight into this?

Higher the Merv number = putting more stress to your furnace. I always buy the cheapest one with only Merv 7 or 8.

Ask anyone that does HVAC..
A 1" pleat is good for only 1 month. A 4" pleat has a dramatically lower pressure drop and are good for about 6 months.

These have been $29.99 before, even a few months back. But still a great deal at $34.99. Most stores are that price for one.

I bought these last fall, I think around $30. I am happy with them. It's the first time I used 4" filters, there is a noticeable airflow increase with these filters compared to lower MERV 1" filter I replaced. The 4" has significantly more filter media surface area than the 1".

Please illuminate us how to verify that our furnaces can handle these filters. The Filtrete website [filtrete.com] is not very helpful. I've reviewed my furnace manual [cliffsheating.com] and it's equally as helpful.

These are merv 13. I bought some but plan to return then. Had no idea these can cause your system to not work efficiently. Am just gonna stick to the cheapest filters.

But they continue to go up in price.
