No these aren't basic backpacks, won't fit under plane seats. Once expanded they are huge hence the title "motherlode." My family have traveled exclusively with these on planes and cruises for week long vacations. Have saved a ton of money by not having to pay checked bag fees

There is a lot of confusion on this thread... Most US Airlines have a carry-on policy size of 22" High x 14" Long x 9" Wide.

So, this Mother Lode EVD ("Everyday") is the smallest of the three (3) offered by eBags:

--- SMALL ---

NAME: Mother Lode EVD Travel Backpack ("Everyday")
PRICE: $24.99 (was $129.99)
SIZE: 16" H x 11.5" L x 7" W
LINK: https://www.ebags.com/mother-lode...0D636.html

--- MEDIUM ---

NAME: Mother Lode Jr Travel Backpack ("Junior")
PRICE: $45.00 (was $179.99)
SIZE: 19.5" H x 13" L x 10.5" W
LINK: https://www.ebags.com/mother-lode...9D636.html

--- LARGE ---

NAME: Mother Lode Travel Backpack
PRICE: $50.00 (was $199.99)
SIZE: 21.5" H x 13.5" L x 11.8" W

This is a great deal. I use this bag as my primary carry-on. It's very well constructed and thought out. Holds a ton ..special section for laptops.

Phenomenal deal, I think the cheapest one I paid $60 and was worth every penny. I have 3 of the motherlode backpacks used for vacation without the need for checked luggage. They easily fit in the overhead bins and can fit the same amount of stuff as a standard size suitcase.

Standard size suitcase? Not like a backpack that you can push it under seat?

A yr ago I ended up in buying some bags in Germany (20 x 16 x 7 Vs 16" H x 11.5" L x 7" ) so we can fly on their local planes w/o bags fees - they frown upon bag sizes - American bags are big for them. Comparing it to this, instead of 11.5" it is 20" and no extra compartments.

I have two of those bought from Germany - appears a little bigger than these but simple rectangular construction.
I wonder if I need the Mother Lode EVD Backpack? I am on the edge!

It's not. The EVD is more of an everyday backpack, whereas the one you linked is larger for travel.
