I purchased this a while back while searching for something that would hold the leatherman 1/4" flat bits. It actually does a decent job, so long as the bit end that you are inserting (they are double-ended so not the end you are looking to use!) isn't too wide. e.g. leatherman bits with a 1/4" flathead end on the side that you are inserting into this will not hold properly. That is because the 1/4" flathead is too wide to fit into the smaller hole in the middle of the holder, so the bit cannot reach the retention ball properly.

I thought I had lost my leatherman ratcheting bit adapter and went down this strange hole of looking to build a replacement.

Don't know why somebody would DV your question, but here are 2 ideas for you (below). The Wiha is an interesting option - small and compact with its own set screw to tightly hold bits. The second option is from HFT, and is only $5... and even cheaper with coupon, but I the HFT, while fairly cheap, works quite well.
