I've been looking for a cheap Mac laptop to try and deal with my photos better… should I get this? Decisions decisions…
Depends on what you are doing with photos. Are they raw images you are processing with Photoshop or Lightroom? This only has 256gb of local storage so if you are dealing with high rez raw files you would likely want to add a larger external hard drive. I used my m1 air for editing in Lightroom and Photoshop for years performance was fine, but the 13" screen was't ideal so I use a dedicated desktop with a large monitor now.

I think thats an AIR? This is a PRO?
The performance difference between M1 Air and Pro in this deal is minimal. Pro has more battery life and can run a bit better under full loads. But Air had physical function keys, which are probably a better trade off for the typer of user shopping for $600 laptops.

8GB RAM is a bigger issue than storage if using a RAW editor. My main editing machine is a M1 Mac Studio w/ 1TB SSD. Even still I use external SSDs for my LR libraries.

But that's if you are editing RAW files. For those using Apple Photos and maybe PS Express they can get away with 8GB. You can store your Apple Photo library on an external drive.

8gb on the m1 Macbook air has been fine for me but everyone's expectations are different. Mostly editing 20-megapixel canon raw files in Lightroom classic.

Feels crazy to say but I'd definitely buy the M1 Air over this. Physical buttons and no fans are big wins.

Great deal, but 8GB isn't enough.
For what? I am a photographer and have this Pro. Maybe for extreme video editing or gaming, but 8GB with that M1 chip is plenty for most needs.

No way. That i5 is awful. And the fan in those older Pros will drive you nuts!

One nice thing about the m1 air is that it's passively cooled and performs great for general use.
one nice thing about the macbook pro 13.3 is that it can also be passively cooled.. but it can also utilize fans so that it doesn't thermal throttle... that said I don't know how well that works out, but it's nice to have both options.. and since m1 is cool.. and apple is aggressive with letting things throttle at the expensive of lower noise (not turning fans on) you get the best of both worlds. and i'm sure this is great for general use, too lmfao. there is no downside of having fans in M series macs.

ppl saying that "no fans" is a big win are .. well, let's just say special. mbp users always boast about how the fans rarely turn on.. it's no different here. lmfao.. apple consumer logic is so bizarre
