Maybe thats why its under 2k? I paid $2500 for my oled razer 16 with same specs but mine has the newer 14900hx

Some people use an external monitor a majority of the time, sometimes 100% of the time even with a laptop.
Some and I'm not one of those some. I play on my laptop's screen all the time. Only outside input I use is an Xbox controller and mouse.
165 refresh rate vs 240 refresh rate debate. Yes, HP needs to get up to date and put 240hz on this and other laptops.
BUT.....the average gamer isn't going to notice nor many above average gamers. Unless you're HIGHLY competitive, then the 240hz is going to help you get that fastest refresh rate and smoothest input. So, technically, 144hz and 165hz is more than enogh for the above average gamer and below.
It's the same as those that say you NEED 32GB of RAM. No, you do not unless you're someone who edits photo's/video's on a daily basis or someone who needs 100 Chrome tabs open with a mutiple discord channels open while playing a game and watching someone stream the game they are playing. 16GB is plenty this day and age.

On a desk, it's way better to have an external monitor and keyboard mouse, and you won't be finding a nice 32" OLED on any laptop. Having a laptop 4090 at this price is a steal. The rest of the laptop isn't bad either. Most gaming laptops have crap displays anyway.

Charlotte location only I guess. Change zip and choose the Charlotte store. Tempting... But I would have to fly out there and back to get the deal. Might still be cheaper than buying locally. LOL.

But saying most gaming laptops have crap screens is pretty far off statement. They are very good and do what they need to for the above average AND below users. There are many IPS screens that look BETTER than OLEDs but if you can tell the difference between those, you're special as hardly any human eye can truly tell the difference but only in CERTAIN videos or pictures.

While I agree, I would have to guess that many people who are buying something with this power will use it hooked up to a external display most of the time, Minus travel.

Thanks for your input but the only aspect of it being a desktop replacement (in my opinion) is the size and depending on the laptop.....cost. Other than that, is it really a desktop replacement when a desktop performs better overall?
None of my laptops that I've owned since the mid 2000s have ever been considered by myself, a desktop replacement and have only been hooked up to a monitor/TV other than to watch movies on a much bigger screen with others. They were meant to be a means to travel and game. Obviously they've gotten better over the years and can handle AAA games with much more ease.
I bet most of the people who come in for these desktop replacements have to have 32GB of RAM as well huh? Because that's what they "heard" was the best. Again, a marketing scheme when 16GB is plenty unless you are into editing. But a selling point of it being a laptop shouldn't even be in the conversation honestly.

A MacBook pro is not really a DTR because it can still get 5+ hours unplugged and is usable really anywhere. A "gaming laptop with a 4090 175Watt GPU" is clearly not meant for "on the go" Battery on this last like 1-2 hours - DTR Just because something is a DTR doesn't mean you can't take it with you. But I doubt someone is writing a novel on one of these in a hotel room.
At then end of the day the best way to look at this is if it spends 90% of its life in your home in a fixed location, It's a DTR. I think you are getting hung up on the acronym.
This is a powerful gaming laptop that is most likely going to be used at Home/College/Lan Parties. But it's not something most people would buy for on the go work, travel etc. While it doesn't have all the performance of its desktop counter part it blows always what gaming laptops used to offer..
