Are they air tight without the lids? Then it's 12 airtight containers. You can't say shit tight and then count the lids separate.

I grabbed the pyrex snapware 18 piece (9 containers) for $20 at my Costco last week. Was a better deal for my needs (and the lids are writeable).

Every set of multi piece kitchen storage has always counted lids and bins as separate pieces. It's not that big a deal at all once you get that, nobody gets angry that TVs are measured on the diagonal to 'get the biggest number'.
