When trying the Google Play gift card with code GOOG, I got a message saying that the code could not be applied to this order. I went ahead with the order anyway, because I wouldn't mind having the $50, even with no promo, and I did end up getting the promotional credit. So, at least in the case of GOOG, the promo code is not required. The promotion applies automatically.

you are correct. Amazon gift cards are no longer accepted. It did say 5% back on Amazon Prime Visa card if you have that as a payment option.
