Ban won't matter if you already bought it

It's not to protect you. It's because American drone manufacturer's cannot compete due to higher price and shittier product. So they lobbied the politicians to ban DJI. Lobbying is how most things are done at the Capitol.

Yeah it's really 90 days - price match/adjustment or accept a return/rebuy.
Price match has to be done within a month. You can return in 3 months if you want.

Well, I may pick it up for roof and solar panel inspections, as lightweight concrete tiles can't be walked on. At least not by this 200lb hairless ape. If it gets "grounded" by more bullshit government overreach in the next 90 days, back it goes to Costco. Decent deal.

Also, any links anyone could provide to the supposed "grandfathering" so many have mentioned, of previous purchases, would be appreciated because my brain can't wrap around how they'd geolock or ban the use of new and keep old flying, knowing how app-dependent the drone is. TIA.

I only took a cursory look through this, but it appears they're modifying an existing law that banned certain telecom equipment. That original act provided $1 billion in funds to reimburse telecom providers for replacement equipment. It allowed for temporary extensions of the deadline in cases providers couldn't get their hands on replacements, but ultimately all of the equipment had to be removed from service. No grandfathering.

Since they're shoehorning DJI drones into this Act, I am at a loss to figure out how it would apply to ordinary citizens. It reads like all of that equipment would be grounded, period. But since the reimbursement program was specifically for service providers, I don't see how it would apply to individuals. How would they police it? Would individuals be eligible for reimbursement for a new drone? Will they add more funds since I would guess DJI drone sales are well in excess of $1 billion and most those funds are probably already spent for previous telecom equipment. I have more questions than answers after reading this...

So if they don't let DJI operate on US communications infrastructure we'll be OK? I haven't been keeping up with this issue. my DJI stuff is kind of boring compared to real drones. I guess I'll have to take my mini 2 out and try flying it with the phone data turned off and see. I thought I remembered no connection, no bueno. I mean I realize we wouldn't get updates but who cares for a flying camera?
Your memory is deceiving you. I fly my mini 2 with an old galaxy phone that has no cell service. Furthermore, I've flown in areas with no wi-fi connection. All it needs is a GPS signal. Of course, you don't get any updates to the app until you connect to the internet.

Regarding the ban, I don't know how realistically or easily they can stop people from flying. Everyone has an opinion, I'm not smart enough to know which are more likely correct.

I do believe that knowing our government, it will at least be a few years out before they effectively shut everything down if that's what it comes to.

Can't the Chinese government just look at whatever via satellites? This seems like an unproductive roundabout way to spy.

I still fly the OG Mavic Pro via an ancient One+1 phone, with no updates or internet connection. Just around my house for gutter/roof inspections. But going forward, I wonder if the same strategy is possible for newer stuff like an Avata 2 if there is a communications ban.

Thanks for that info. I may end up just selling it on eBay as it's just collecting dust. It will be nice to see what the future holds before I invest in another one.

What I'm worried is that if they ban DJI then the app will somehow stop working and your drone will become useless.

Apple and Google will probably ban the app from their App Store but I don't think they'll remotely delete the app from your phone. However whatever company was hosting servers for DJI might stop servicing them making the app useless and therefore the drone as well.

I believe the vote to ban DJI is tomorrow but who knows when it'll go the senate for a vote and then the White House.
is it in the apple app store?
I thought it had to be sideloaded on android only.

Isnt the DJI Fly app off the Google app store for awhile now? And when I upgraded my phone to the S24 the app just crashes.

See, I couldn't find anything either, yet inevitably someone will come I to these threads for DJI drones and say the "grandfathering" bit whenever someone mentions these things being paperweights after the bill passes.

I know there's a segment of folks who talk completely out of their asses sometimes, but in case I missed a line or two I didn't want to speak out of school on this.
