didn't know this even existed. for a moment i thought this is a external GPU hub with a optional SSD slot like GPD G1
and i cannot see why anyone would use it. that's like tie together your network card, key board, mouse and monitor to a storage?

So basically only a good deal for handheld gaming consoles and gaming laptops as its 2tb of ssd storage plus a mediocre docking station.
Great for hooking a steamdeck/ally/claw/etc up to a tv and adding some game storage, basically pointless for most people though
Can you please educate me? Isn't this a pretty good price for a powered Thunderbolt 3 dock by itself (selling for $80 on Walmart w/o any SSD)? Granted everyone's needs are different regarding the number of ports they need, but wouldn't this be a decent laptop dock for an average user? Throw in the decently priced integrated SSD (+ less clutter, - trouble if it goes bad) and it appears like a decent solution.
The dock with no NVME is $79 and the 1tb is $129 and all three are back in stock.
One interesting use case for this is the ability to use a M.2 (PCIe) to full size PCIe for GPU, 10Gbe, external SAS controller, video capture card, etc.
Another nice feature is that this has upstream & downstream TB3 ports so you can daisy chain, with the caveat that the downstream port is 1/2 the bandwidth but still much faster than USB3.2.
The drive included in the 1tb and 2tb are Western Digital SN730 (OEM SN750). They are not the fastest drives and they do run on the hot side.
The 1tb is probably the best value if you consider the dock itself is $79... that puts the 1tb drive at $50. If you bump up to the 2tb the additional cost of the drive is $120, or $60/tb which isn't great for this particular drive.
This is sold and fulfilled by Western Digital and they're using UPS shipping. I ordered a pair of empty D50 on the 6th... they didn't physically get handed over to UPS until yesterday and UPS ground has an ETA of June 14th. Pretty terrible fulfillment/shipping speed IMHO, so keep that in mind.
Thunderbolt 3 has been terribly overpriced from inception but for the right use case it is very useful. $80 for the empty dock is much cheaper than any alternative and the 2tb version was $679 at launch, to put the price drop over time into perspective.

TB3 is quite inadequate for egpu, you need TB4, or better yet, oculink. The one purposely made for oculink can be had for about hundred dollars, and that's also come with the power supply bracket for your graphic card. What are you going to do with this? We're going to do the cable management for your external power supply?

Yes and no, the total max bandwidth is the same at 40G, but. But with thunderbolt 3, uplink and downlink speed are the same, which means you max out about 20G one way, but tb4 allows you to allocate more bandwidth to one direction, in actuality, you got 32G vs 20, a significant difference. since oculink does even better job, it just it just rendered all thunderbolt external graphic card solutions obsolete, and it's much cheaper too

Any heating issue?
Is the NVME upgradeable to 4TB?
