Thanks! Was hoping it wasnt the device itself. I can see there maybe being aftermarket straps if garmin ends up not having replacements.
Ive used apple watch for HR for years but really would love some better data.
Well the problem is that with the newer straps (over the past 5 ish years) the device is built into the strap. Can't remove it and change the strap like the older generations. Disappointing because the old generations were IMO more comfortable and you could machine wash the straps on gentle cycle and they would last much longer. Planned obsolescence I guess...
If I remember right, Polar still has a module you can separate from the strp but it doesn't give as much info, and I'm married to the Garmin ecosystem.
You get used to it within a few minutes and forget you have it on. I am very sensitive and didn't mind it at all. Plus the big benefit is you don't have a delay in your heart rate spikes up and down like you do with the watch. It feels much closer to a live heart rate

Wahoo's Tickr is also a separate strap and I like it but as you say, the ecosystem is key. I personally don't use any strap specific metrics and rely on it only for HR so it's ok but I know not everyone is like this.
Thanks OP. This strap is great and changing the battery is easier now. I run 5-6x per week and use this strap on all my runs, mainly just use it for the HR data as I use Stryd pod for the other running dynamics. It's lasted 1 year now and still going strong, whereas the lower end HRM dual strap had started losing elasticity about a year in. Would 100% buy this again.
I'm mainly using it for CrossFit,Kettlebell and gym workouts, I can leave the watch and only use strap.
When I'm stopping workout on my watch all data is transferred and synchronized with Watch and Garmin.
How much more accurate is this compared to a wrist heart rate monitor?
For me the wrist measurement using watch was always way off at the end of the workout when I was sweaty etc.
Strap solved all issues with data accuracy.
Must have for garmin users, I'm using it for running but main reason for me to buy it: I consider it as a "meter", so I measure stress during workout(been using it with strength workout too) so I can have idea about recovery time. I had big problem with recovery and overtrainings and this thing helped me a lot
How much more accurate is this compared to a wrist heart rate monitor?
Significantly. Wrist based detectors use optical sensors whire are good when standing still, but not when moving and sweaty, especially when running.
Heart rate straps are generally accepted to be 99%+ in accuracy. I run in this exact one daily. There is a massive difference between this and my Forerunner 965
A lot more accuracy with little lag so you'd be actually able to track sprints. Additionally you would be able to get a lactate threshold estimate and use it for much more accurate heart rate zones based on threshold.
I got this last time deal. Great, it also integrates with my treadmill smart adjustment feature and also tracks mowing the yard through Garmin connect.
I was surprised the strap barely fit for a 38 male (normal) chest size. You may need to buy a Garmin extension strap if larger chest.
