Solid price even given new 9000 gen coming out. I've been using the stock cooler that comes with it under long periods of constant load and it's performed well so that's another $30 or so that isn't required.

Not sure I'd buy ATM though unless needed immediately before seeing 9000 gen reviews

The 9000 series looks like they'll have a small performance bump from this generation, but it'll be more efficient and will have less heat (especially the 9700X). If you're building in a small itx case, I'd wait for the 9700X, but if you have ample cooling, then this is a great deal.

An estimated 40% increase is a pretty big bump

Ehh. AMD themselves have said Zen 5 will be around 16% faster on average. Although there will be some benchmarks where 40%+ is likely (AES, software that can use AVX-512, etc.)
For gaming, AMD has stated Zen 5 should end up a tad slower than Zen 4 X3D chips.

Remember this might just be a selected result. But I agree with you 40% is a nice increase.
I upgraded coming from a 5800x I personally don't see a huge improvement but I can slightly.

I see that 7800X3D is touted as the gaming chip worth going for in some circles, but it's around $100 or so more over this.
Is it worth that price bump if I want something that can handle gaming with a mid/high range card? Or is it better to save the difference?
