And everyone complaining must not have customized your fire cube/ stick. I don't know what you mean by ads I have Zero for years with custom launcher and things disabled.

When I got one it wouldn't recognize a USB. The new fire max is in my opinion just as fast. Let me know if I'm mistaken.

This has a faster CPU than the shield, shield is much better GPU though.
Which mainly only matters for gaming. Do people actually use these to game?

It gets harder to do that stuff now since amazon pushes out updates to counter that

To add to this, fireOS has been getting progressively worse as time goes by. They are being more intrusive with ads and locking the system down. If you have any desire to customize anything I'd steer clear. The new Onn 4k Pro unit seems to be much more open for now. It may not have the same processor , but it operates smooth and has 32GB storage on board with a USB port for expansion. Plus the Onn unit is only $49.99 at wally world.
This cube model blows the 4k onn box in terms of performance. I had the cube for a year now and got the onn box pro when it came out to try it out. I instantly able to see how sluggish it is compared to the cube. If you compare the pro box to a stick it may appear "smooth" but if you compare it to an actual power device youll notice how sluggish it is.

I've had a fire tv cube and many fire products and they are all sluggish vs. Roku. The OS gets slower as apps fill it up and I always end up unplugging it.
You must of had the first gen fire cube because thats the only sluggish fire cube that exists.

I had a Fire TV Cube die within the warranty period and Amazon sent me a refub cube to replace it. The refub died in a month and I protested to Amazon and was basically told to read the fine print. Good luck with trusting Amazon, especially for refubs.
I had a similar experience. Bought 2 and 1 died within the warranty period. Got the replacement quickly but i have never had a tv box die on me other than the 3rd gen cube

I already have the 2017 nvidia Shield - it's been showing its age for a while.

Should I get this refurb Fire Cube?
If you can get over the ads on the os then yeah. I dont really care as much as other people do because i dont spend my time on the home screen.

This is true but for people who have had fire stuff for over a year or longer there is No excuse to not have it jailbroken and updates blocked or bootloader unlocked for those that had the chance.

I'm in the same boat. Unfortunately for my use, this has the same issue as my shield. There's not enough internal storage for my ballooning Kodi app, which I'm currently forced to offload onto a USB stick on my shield. The cube also has the same amount, just 16gb.

Idk why people complain about ads too much. It's Amazon we are talking about. You either pay more and go with Apple TV (no sideloading) and have no ads, or pay dirt cheap and deal with Amazon. I personally have no issues with Amazon Home Screen. Once you disable the auto play, it becomes a static image. And sometimes those are just suggestions, not even ads. I find them useful when I am in need of a new movie or tv show.

This is the most powerful Fire TV you can buy and it has 16gb of storage. It has speakers and microphones built-in, plus you get HDMI in port. It's super easy to sideload apps. Let me add two more things, if you like Fire TV, this is the only model with AI upscaling and 16gb of storage.

It's not for everyone, but I certainly enjoy Fire TVs!

Would this be any good for running emulators for older games?

I have the 2nd Gen Fire TV still going strong, I added a USB to Ethernet adapter and a usb drive for extra storage. I'm glad they're coming out w/ new versions though.

Amazon spam way too much, seems like you get to watch ad before you see anything else.
I have one if those and it's fine, about same as $20 one from Walmart ....I wold by the new $50 one from Walmart before I by another Amazon one.
