To add to this, fireOS has been getting progressively worse as time goes by. They are being more intrusive with ads and locking the system down. If you have any desire to customize anything I'd steer clear. The new Onn 4k Pro unit seems to be much more open for now. It may not have the same processor , but it operates smooth and has 32GB storage on board with a USB port for expansion. Plus the Onn unit is only $49.99 at wally world.

I was just going to ask about the FireStick 4k Max comparison.

What are the practical differences between the sticks and the cubes?

Idk why people complain about ads too much. It's Amazon we are talking about. You either pay more and go with Apple TV (no sideloading) and have no ads, or pay dirt cheap and deal with Amazon. I personally have no issues with Amazon Home Screen. Once you disable the auto play, it becomes a static image. And sometimes those are just suggestions, not even ads. I find them useful when I am in need of a new movie or tv show.

This is the most powerful Fire TV you can buy and it has 16gb of storage. It has speakers and microphones built-in, plus you get HDMI in port. It's super easy to sideload apps. Let me add two more things, if you like Fire TV, this is the only model with AI upscaling and 16gb of storage.

It's not for everyone, but I certainly enjoy Fire TVs!

Why bother with anything more than a $20 ONN box? Plenty of room for several apps and you don't have to bother with all that "side loading" garbage.

If you have a 2nd gen Cube, try this - https://xdaforums.com/t/usb-boota...n.4616307/ [xdaforums.com]

This is CoreElec, ie Kodi and will give you a device that does full bitstreaming of all HD audio, runs faster than a Shield, and has the old Amazon UI without any ads.
I have done this. It works, but it is kludgy. I would hardly say it runs faster than a Shield - CoreElec UI performance is pretty laggy though I have yet to try moving storage to the eemc. It will play anything you can throw at it in CE though and playback performance is good.

Most importantly it requires a Cube 2 that hasn't been updated over 2 years in order to be rooted. So it's find one that has been unplugged for 2 years, had updates blocked for 2 years, or still new in box.

Just a fair warning, if you watch anything subtitled or captioned, fire sucks. The only truly legible and actually customizable subtitles I have ever used are on Apple TV. Even open google TV does not come close. Fire and Roku are the worst when it comes to subtitles

I actually have a local seller who claims to have a cube 2 he hasn't used, I was planning to buy that, but your comment about speed is a concern. I used to own a Nvidia Shield from 2017 but sold it, it had too many issues with audio dropouts and its well documented, they wanted me to to buy new Pro which is nothing more than a minor sw update.

How was the user experience on the Cube2+CoreElec? does CEC work. can you turn it on/off via remote? do the voice commands work? is the old Amazon UI still there and does it work for things like Prime, or is it only for CE?

Huh? "All that side loading garbage" is a primary reason to get an Android-based streaming device.

You don't have to do that with an Onn box for $20. For example... It takes a lonnnnng list of steps to get Tivimate installed on a fire device. You have to click 7 times to turn on developer options...then you have to allow unknown sources....then you have to install downloader...then you have to download Tivimate inside downloader.... It's all garbage.
On an Onn box...you simply go to the app store and click install.

As far as speed in CoreElec, UI responsiveness is just not as fast as a Shield. You're running off a USB 2.0 bus so your OS on a USB stick and network if you are wired are both constrained to that. I hear moving core storage to the eemc drive helps a lot as I've seen people with the Ugoos complain of lag until they moved storage off an external drive. For me it is noticeable in CE when flying through my library, images take a few seconds to load that I don't see in Kodi on the newest stick or cube 3. It's good enough as is to get the job done though. On wired ethernet I can play full UHD Remux rips with full lossless audio perfectly. It starts playing right away and just works.

There are some quirks with switching back and forth between CE and fireOS but you can do it. CEC does work between the two. Because of Alexa, cubes aren't really designed to ever be turned off. In CE, you can remotely shut the device down but you cannot remotely turn it on - you have to press the action button on the device to boot it up. Most of us are just leaving the Cube on all the time in CE.

As far as FireOS I've barely used it but I've read almost everything should work. There are a few apps that will not play if they detect a rooted device - I don't know the exhaustive list of these. As far as which FireOS UI you get, it depends on what your cube comes with. I don't know what version they added all the ads to the homescreen but mine came with the ancient one that is just a list of apps with no ads so I haven't even overridden the launcher. PS7292 is the max version that can be rooted, I don't know what it looks like.

Can it be a 1 device solution? Yes but with asterisks. It certainly gets closer than the Ugoos which isn't Android TV and not certified so no Widevine / no streaming apps.

For me, I did this because I thought would be fun. I'm okay with having it as part of a 2 device solution. There remains no perfect device if you care about high definition audio, streaming apps, and DV P7 FEL.

and none of those steps are guaranteed to keep working. the other HUGE reason Amazon devices suck is they don't have the google app store, instead they have the total joke they call the Amazon app store, where search doesn't work, and if youre lucky you will find 10% of apps that are 2 years out of date.

Fire stick when it came out was a genuine revolution, since it came with a remote for the same price as the chromecast which needed a phone to operate. Fire Cube gen1 was a fantastic device too. But Amazon cripples these. They are good enough when on sale every year, esp if you need to use Prime, but not as general purpose streaming devices.

Nailed it. Hate those things. The $20 Onn box is a streaming miracle for the price.

I have a Firestick 4K which does DV, Prime, Netflix and any other streaming app. I need another one from which to play movies off my pc, inc UHD remux etc. Thats what I was using my Shield for (running Plex/Jellyfin on PC). My options are -

1. old Cube2 running CE
2. Android box running CE
3. Cube3 or FireStick 4K Max with sideloaded Kodi

from what I've read, CE plays everything. #3 will play most HD audio but might have limits and send it as LPCM.

Are you able to boot into either FireOS or into CE with an older rooted Cube2? And when booting into FireOS you can use all its features?

Also Roku devices. Open, work hard to support customers, but lack the name/$$$ of Amazon/Google, who constantly try to cripple other products. Google actively forced their garbage ad filled UI into AndroidTv.

The Mi streaming box and all the other Chinese Android boxes, have FAR better specs. Google intentionally cripples them and won't allow Widevine, to force you to buy inferior hw. Most of the Chinese Android devices were able to decode hevc/av1 years ahead of any of the American devices.

Option 1, either an older rooted Cube 2 or the "Ugoos AM6B Plus" which is the same SoC and can also dual boot CE are the only network players that can play DV P7 FEL and all audio codecs when in CoreElec.

Option 3 will get you all audio codecs in Kodi full passthrough (not just LPCM) and everything except DV P7. They have no Profile 7 support at all, not just FEL. In Kodi you can enable on the fly conversion from P7 to P8 for these devices. Both the Firestick 4k Max 2 and Cube 3 support full lossless TrueHD and DTS-HD MA in Kodi. Plex/Emby will give DTS-HD as DTS Core.

Yes on the Cube 2 you can dual boot. The easiest way is to just unplug the USB stick and it will boot to fireOS and vice versa. This is part of the kludgyness I mentioned. There is a way to reboot to fireOS from CoreElec discussed here on XDA [xdaforums.com].

As far as functionally in FireOS I believe I covered that in my previous reply. Everything works except apps that look for root and won't run - I don't know which these are.

fire tv 3rd gen is still much faster than onn pro. check lon.tv's review of onn pro. he compares benchmarks.
