Bad flash drive with unacceptably slow speeds.

Unacceptably slow
My Mac was reporting it would take 4 hours to copy 344MB worth of files and 20GB in 3 days, so I had to return the unit. It works, it just takes hours or days of waiting for files to copy. The Kingston DataTraveler Max took 10 minutes to copy 40GB worth of files.

In all these years SanDisk never bothered fixing this problem. The SanDisk extreme drives are the only SanDisk drives that aren't garbage. I mainly use Samsung.

Have several of these more for the convenience of having both Type A and C connectors, speed not as important. Having moved several large files Write speed settles down to about 40MiB/s Read speeds are around 90+ MiB/s. With the metal housing they get pretty hot during writing and the Swivel is pretty easy to loosen up if you pull on it incorrectly or bump the drive while it is plugged in.

Don't buy slow drive no matter how cheap. The frustration is not worth the little saving.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank BlueVoyager308

I bought a 256GB SanDisk Ultra Luxe for $12.44 on last Friday. Also have these low-priced USB A to C adapters bought from years ago (2018). See pics below.

In comparison, this 128GB is not a deal. I won't consider it even if it's $9.99. 128GB is a thing of the past. The last 128GB I bought was in May 2023 for $7.49 each.

By the same token, I didn't buy two or three of those 256GB, just one. Because 512GB is the future. My future purchase will be 512GB or larger. I'm keeping tabs on a Samsung 512GB Pro microSD. Will pull the trigger when it's $28.99 again.

Agree--find these super convenient, and agree as well that speed is less important for this application.

I didn't measure any speeds, but I have the 64GB version and use it all the time to move pics off my phone to my laptop for archive. It's great and never lost any data. I use the included software because it was easy and I like how I don't need any cables because it has both connectors. It's insanely fast for me but I have not tested it on a Mac.

Very rarely do I store more than a couple GB on a flash drive. It's usually a backup powerpoint or an OS boot disk. There are still plenty of reasons to pick up smaller drives.

You definitely shouldn't be using any of these things as backup media, either.

The problem, some of the "older" equipments won't accept bigger drive... My 10 year old van won't accept anything bigger than 32GB... my amplifier won't at 128GB (this drive fits perfectly)... so... sometimes smaller drive has to do...

The faster version has complaints about speed as well, but the review you're quoting is the 150MBs variant, and OP posted the 400 MBs version.

Format the 256GB USB to FAT32. Your old equipment will read it. Make sure it is not exFAT or something fancy.

Exercise extreme caution with any flash drive that only lists the read speed. Pepper on an extra dose of suspicion when you see the words "up to".
