I got the SD at Amazon for same price but returned it.

Most hikers and car campers will be better served by rechargeable LEDs.

What were the issues with this actual product that prompted the return?

Depends, it produces light and heat so it works great with easy-ups with side walls installed. I use it along with propane powered stoves when camping on "primitive" campsites without electric hookups. Of course you can go fully electric and invest in Portable Power Station + solar panels + induction stove + led lights, which is really cool, but not for me. I'm boomer 😅

The size of it without the fuel canister, the needed back-up mantels, the rising cost of fuel and the risks during operation.

I did like the design of the carrier and Amazon only packed it in a transparent plastic bag.

For me building a Prius Camper it was just overkill for a single light source.

I've got a Solar Generator with built in light and I installed a 1,100 watt pure sine wave inverter on my Toyota Prius.

I'm a boomer too and I enjoy boon docking the Prius provides me a temp controlled sleep chamber with electric all day long for less than the cost of a pound of propane.

I used one for 3 nights, and one of the mantles fell/burnt off. It was packed up in its case on a picnic table seat, accidentally tipped off, and fell, and the glass broke.

The cost of operation dissuaded me, but there was a cheaper method mentioned.

The price of propane ($4) really makes this rather expensive for 8 hours of light (50¢ per hour).
Yes, your math is based on using disposable Coleman cylinders.

But I use refillable Flame King cylinders, filled from 30# tanks. Which works out to about 60 cents per one pound fill, which is about 8 cents per hour.
