Just purchased a DS224+ yesterday. The DS923+ shown here is a bargain and pretty tempting.

For anyone wondering
The final 2 numbers in their model is the year they came out.

"j" is the budget model
A few others in between
+ Is above the rest of their line with the exception of
Xs = Synology top of the line

Just get any NAS and a cheap Intel mini-PC to actually run Plex. The N100 units are like $150 and can easily transcode multiple 4K streams. Let your NAS just handle file storage.

eggyolk is right. DS224+ units have an Intel Celeron chip.

Well I have to admit I looked it up and found 1 review post spouting they are the same with a side by side visual and everything I went and checked on Synology and you are correct. I'll fix my comment.

You don't hook them up physically. You have both of them on your network, and the PC accesses it like a networked drive.

I remember most Plus versions come with place recognition for picture gallery. I need to check again as that's my sole purpose of buying vs building a Nas. If I build one with RPi, I won't get place or face recognition and automating tagging like the pictures gallery app built into Synology. Seems like they make the best app for that unless anyone can think of a better or cheaper solution. It just doesn't make sense to drop $1000 and save 100/year for photo storage. ICloud and Google photos do the same or even better, right?

Ahhhh I figured it out!
I was researching 224+ vs 923+ and the 423+ comparison slipped in....

Actually thanks to you all because now Ill be sticking with the 224+ arriving tomorrow.

I know it's possible to install the Synology DSM software onto your own PC build to turn it into a NAS, but I'm not sure what the requirements are. If you did that, you'd probably be able to get the place recognition for picture gallery, right?

FWIW, I went the DAS route instead of NAS.
Plex does not care where the drives are. All it sees are folders/volumes to access, and as long as those are accessible from the machine that is running the PMS software, then you're good to go.

Synology created DSM. Its a great nas operating system but i do not think its a difference maker anymore like it used to be.

If you really want the form factor and power consumption of a prebuilt nas, get one that allows you to install your own os (a few vendors allows that now, like ugreen)

Otherwise as mentioned by many: build your own nas. Jonsbo makes beautiful NAS cases that rivals synology.

ifYou need a config to start, select the nas case of your dreamand check the builds using that case on pcpartpicker.
