Just purchased a DS224+ yesterday. The DS923+ shown here is a bargain and pretty tempting.

For anyone wondering
The final 2 numbers in their model is the year they came out.

"j" is the budget model
A few others in between
+ Is above the rest of their line with the exception of
Xs = Synology top of the line

Just get any NAS and a cheap Intel mini-PC to actually run Plex. The N100 units are like $150 and can easily transcode multiple 4K streams. Let your NAS just handle file storage.

Yeah just cheaper. One reason I went with NAS is that it allows me to put the somewhat noisy clicking hard drives anywhere I can run Ethernet. DAS has to be next to your mini PC. My mini PC is in my bedroom where I don't really want the noise of mechanical drives working away.

My advice if you're tech savvy: Get a Dell refurb with the specs you want and install "Xpenology" which is basically just DSM. It's way cheaper and you get to pick the hardware you want. I've been running it for around 5-6 years with no issues and have a full Windows 10 VM running on mine.

What are you talking about? They had a warning on their enterprise units that can easily be removed using a script. Mainly because they have different warrants and such for those enterprise units.

The deal units here are both consumer units and don't have such warnings. I've set up and installed over 20 of them in the last year and never seen such warnings, and I used all the major HD brands.

This but get a Beelink n100 mini PC with USB 3.2 10GB and a JBOD enclosure with USB3.2. 5 to 10 bays with your choice of raid software. My plex is 80TB and growing fast.

I think you would be able to get it but I don't think it can run on PC, perhaps it may need virtual pc to emulate synology, if it's even available as image.

Is it possible to do other way around?

Run PC on Windows and have DSM on VM (and Share drives wbetween them)?

I want to do something like that with my PC that I am currently using for network storage with Windows. I want to use DSm for Synology Photos or Moments software, which I think much closer to Google Photos than Photoprism that I currently using (which has many issues).

This is a feature was from Synology policy change with dsm 7 and has nothing to do with consumer vs enterprise. My ds2422+, ds220+, ds1520+ all got hit the same way, all populated with major brand nas rated drives. The compatibility list was neutered to almost nothing other than Synology drives unless you install custom scripting to remove the nag. I very much call that anti consumer practices.

Immich is probably the best Google Photos replacement at the moment. I also liked PhotoPrism, but Immich has the brightest future at the moment.

I just checked it looks great. Not sure how well it is with face recognition as that's my main problem right now with all my old photos. I wish it had native windows app but I guess I can work with android and web interface. This also eliminates need for NAS.

Do they allow exporting face data if I were to switch to another app, I wonder if there is even a standard with that.
