For anyone wondering
The final 2 numbers in their model is the year they came out.
"j" is the budget model
A few others in between
+ Is above the rest of their line with the exception of
Xs = Synology top of the line
If not, it's a good deal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Synology makes it very easy to accessing your NAS files anywhere you have an internet connection.
On a mobile device, this is done via the "DS File" App on iOS and Android
On a desktop/laptop, this is done using a web browser and their "QuickConnect" site/relay service. You basically get a public URL to your NAS, whereby anyone for whom you created an account can log in.
Currently, neither of these cost extra money/subscriptions. They are also very easy to use for non-tech-savvy users.
The DS File app is very simple, and has been very reliable in my experience. There are other mobile apps they have for media and photos, but I have not used those.

I just use it for pictures and other backup items.
Thanks!

Been putterin'/building my own boxes for 30+ years.
Decided to jump into the NAS world a few years ago and after a lot of research I decided to go the 1522+ route.
My whole digital world(plex/jellyfin, my android phone and my wife's i-phone, 3 laptops, linux distro's , every receipt and invoice that I have scanned over the last 30 years, photo's, security cameras ) is on this thing.
I also back up the really important stuff off-site and on the 'cloud'.
Everything that I attempted to do and thought would be a battle /hassle went smoooth like buttah.
I toyed with the 'xPenology' idea...but decided against it.
Is the $100 worth for the extra Bay and the 8GB RAM (instead of 4GM RAM).
I do plan on getting 16-2 RAM OWC RAM (Amazon for like $80) so extra RAM is not that enticing enough.
Any suggestions from the experts
Isn't it expected soon to be release the DS424+ with better hardware?
The TB3 is nice to have of course. I went with a reputable manufacturer too (OWC). You could get cheaper options on Amazon for less.
There was no downside for me. Of course NAS has RAID built-in and it treats all of the drives as one, which is nice. But I was able to get that solution working on the server itself that's running Plex using SnapRaid and UnionFS (or DrivePool). The upside of doing it this route is that the drive contents are always kept separate (in case of drive failures), yet I still get to pool the contents together so that Plex only needs to access one volume. It's up to you if you want to dig into that and handle that yourself vs. spending extra on an NAS to handle it.
FWIW I was looking for an equivalent 12TB array and it was like $1500+ on sale. That's a lot to invest in an enclosure
