Just purchased a DS224+ yesterday. The DS923+ shown here is a bargain and pretty tempting.

For anyone wondering
The final 2 numbers in their model is the year they came out.

"j" is the budget model
A few others in between
+ Is above the rest of their line with the exception of
Xs = Synology top of the line

Just get any NAS and a cheap Intel mini-PC to actually run Plex. The N100 units are like $150 and can easily transcode multiple 4K streams. Let your NAS just handle file storage.

If you're looking for a NAS for Plex and need transcoding, this isn't it.
If not, it's a good deal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the tips. My only concern is ease of access from mobile device. All the synology apps makes it easy for me to upload/view all my files. How does something like truenas or Xpenology handle mobile devices?
I want to second this question. Do any other free or open source software make it easy to access your files off-network via the internet?

Synology makes it very easy to accessing your NAS files anywhere you have an internet connection.

On a mobile device, this is done via the "DS File" App on iOS and Android

On a desktop/laptop, this is done using a web browser and their "QuickConnect" site/relay service. You basically get a public URL to your NAS, whereby anyone for whom you created an account can log in.

Currently, neither of these cost extra money/subscriptions. They are also very easy to use for non-tech-savvy users.

The DS File app is very simple, and has been very reliable in my experience. There are other mobile apps they have for media and photos, but I have not used those.

For those who don't need a NAS right away, I'd wait and see if Synology announces a DS1824+ in a few months. They have already announced there will be new NASes later in 2024, and someone already found a "DS1824" mentioned in firmware code a while back. It might be worth the upgrade from the good-but-3-years-old-DS1821+.

This is a feature was from Synology policy change with dsm 7 and has nothing to do with consumer vs enterprise. My ds2422+, ds220+, ds1520+ all got hit the same way, all populated with major brand nas rated drives. The compatibility list was neutered to almost nothing other than Synology drives unless you install custom scripting to remove the nag. I very much call that anti consumer practices.
I can't speak for anyone else but my DS1821+ is on DSM7.2.1 (completely up to date) and you can EASILY click a button (no scripting) to tell it that you assume the risk of using non-Synology drives, and it will let you do it. Same thing with RAM. Business/enterprise Synology NASes are apparently stricter, but the workaround is easy--like making a tiny edit to the config file (google it).

Bull, I run my plex server off of one of these 1821+, it handles 2 streams of transcodes without a problem unless it's super high bit rate, HDR, or 4k.

Same. I have a family of six doing mobile phone photo backup, laptop backup and file storage on a synology. The synology is still admin and handholding work, but it all works easily enough I don't go nuts wasting my time fiddling with some bespoke solution. Recently upgraded to 1522+ to add more space and speed to make my life simpler/easier.

For those who need EASY (and secure) access to files off-network using the internet: Synology Drive + Tailscale. This is the way.

Should I upgrade from my ancient DS214+ ? Or maybe should I just replace the drives, the unit is ~10 years old?

I just use it for pictures and other backup items.

Thanks!

Big 'upvote' for Synology.

Been putterin'/building my own boxes for 30+ years.

Decided to jump into the NAS world a few years ago and after a lot of research I decided to go the 1522+ route.

My whole digital world(plex/jellyfin, my android phone and my wife's i-phone, 3 laptops, linux distro's , every receipt and invoice that I have scanned over the last 30 years, photo's, security cameras ) is on this thing.

I also back up the really important stuff off-site and on the 'cloud'.

Everything that I attempted to do and thought would be a battle /hassle went smoooth like buttah.

I toyed with the 'xPenology' idea...but decided against it.

Wish they'd update the 1019+ with an 8 bay model. I'm running out of storage and instead of adding the DX add-on I'd rather just get an 8 bay model that supports transcoding

How would you hook up the NAS to pc?
It's actually connecting the PC to the NAS. You open up a file share on the NAS and point Plex on the PC to that network location. Super easy.

DS923+ or the DS1522+, which also goes on sale for $580 sometimes, but hardly seen that deal since last Dec 2023 (slick deals data).
Is the $100 worth for the extra Bay and the 8GB RAM (instead of 4GM RAM).
I do plan on getting 16-2 RAM OWC RAM (Amazon for like $80) so extra RAM is not that enticing enough.
Any suggestions from the experts

I don't get it why a box and several adapters put together can be so expensive? I mean it's just a mental box. There's no high tech in this.

Since this year's hardware of DS224+ is pretty much the same as last year's DS423+.
Isn't it expected soon to be release the DS424+ with better hardware?

Thank you. Was there any benefits of going thr DAS route? I'm guessing speed and cost?
Just speed and cost. I was able to get two TB3 DAS enclosures (12 bay total) for under $800.
The TB3 is nice to have of course. I went with a reputable manufacturer too (OWC). You could get cheaper options on Amazon for less.

There was no downside for me. Of course NAS has RAID built-in and it treats all of the drives as one, which is nice. But I was able to get that solution working on the server itself that's running Plex using SnapRaid and UnionFS (or DrivePool). The upside of doing it this route is that the drive contents are always kept separate (in case of drive failures), yet I still get to pool the contents together so that Plex only needs to access one volume. It's up to you if you want to dig into that and handle that yourself vs. spending extra on an NAS to handle it.

FWIW I was looking for an equivalent 12TB array and it was like $1500+ on sale. That's a lot to invest in an enclosure

Anyone have any idea of the Synology august release will be with hardware newer than 4 years old?
