It has been a while since I have played it. I would say that the Mage followed by the Dwarf starting characters have the best origins. It is quite a grim and mature storyline -- would definitely recommend it if you enjoy turn-based strategic combat (you can turn the pause between actions off to make things more RTS). DA:II is inferior btw.

I played it for the first time maybe 2 years ago? I think it held up fine personally but as the other person mentioned the horror elements were... rough. Not bad, just unexpected and searing.
