I would stick with whatever you have (most likely a mobile phone).

These are expensive cameras and lenses, and you should have a minimum level of understanding of the basics of photography before dropping serious coin on them. They aren't magical "take perfect picture" machines -- though there are automatic modes, if you don't know what you're doing, you'll probably get worse results than from one's mobile phone.

I'm not trying to gatekeep them or exclude anyone from learning -- but it'd be a dang shame for someone to drop hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and be disappointed with the end results only because they didn't take the time to understand what they were buying.

that EF 50 1.4 looks mighty tasty. methinks it would be great for my flower photos, and i must pull the trigger.

I don't know anything about photography. Which of these would be good for taking portraits of a baby like 5 to 10 feet away?

Use portrait mode on iPhones. Probably android has something equivalent. I agree with the above person. It will take some practice to take good photos using DSLRs.

Was going to get a 50mm 1.4 as a backup to mine, but I'll hold out for the RF 24-70. Maybe I'll get one for xmas. I love the 50mm, but sometimes I want to take a group shot and don't want to back up 20 feet to do so!
It was $1299 during holiday sale.

How is RF 15-30mm on FF? Can it match old EF-S 10-22mm on crop?

Planing to buy R50 camera as my first begginer camera. Please recommend begginer friendly lens and accessories to go with it.

It is an awesome lens. Focus is so fast and you can get f1.0 in right conditions.

How exactly do you get an f1.0 aperture on a lens whose maximum aperture is f1.4????

You're not wrong, *but* the refurb R100 with kit lens at only $299 is a hell of an entry point into "real" cameras.

Sure, the more expensive models are better, but the R100 is plenty good to take amazing baby photos while learning serious photography skills. It's competitive with cameras that would have cost $1500+ six years ago.

Have a 550d with the two kit lenses and wanting to get one with lower focal length for some more portraity photos. Any thoughts or advice on a good pick here? The kit lenses bottom at f 3.5 so ideally lower than that. Ideally 300 or below so theres like 3 or 4 options on this link. Thanks!

Wide angle portraits can be fun, but typically you want higher focal lengths for portraits, it's flattering and helps blur the background.

Did you mean you want a lower f stop (wider aperture)?

Before you decide your kit lenses aren't good enough, try zooming all the way in at its widest aperture, you might be surprised how much background blur you already have.

That said, I know f/2.8 can be really pretty.

Thanks for the advice. Yep, meant lower f stop, oops. The latter suggestion is why I first got interested, because there wasn't enough blur for my liking to get that super portrait affect. Narrowed down the options to a 24 mm 2.8, 50 1.8, and 50 1.4, and just wondering if i'll be able to get the full effect i want at 2.8 since its only a little further away from 3.5. Also my camera is aps-c so in practice i believe the 24 will be closer to 40 and the 50 closer to 80 so still debating, especially if i want to try for full body portraits.

Edit: Did some more research and the 50 1.4 seems to have a weak design and is less sharp than the 50 1.8 so I'm thinking of not considering the 1.4 anymore. Has the added benefit of being half the price too lol.
