Put a small amount of seeds in a glass or bowl of water

Shake the glass

Wait about 15 minutes

See if the seeds sink or float

If more than 80% of the seeds sink, the seeds are probably viable and ready to germinate in the right conditions. Viable seeds are denser than dead seeds because they contain something, while dead seeds are hollow and float because they lack the starch and carbohydrates needed for germination. If most of the seeds float, you can discard them.

or

Germination test

Put at least 10 seeds in a row on a damp paper towel, fold the towel over, and put it in a sealed plastic bag in a warm place. After a few days, see if any of the seeds have sprouted. If less than 70% germinate, you might want to buy new seeds.
I normally agree with your sentiment but this is 75% seed with fertilizer. At just over 4 lbs of seed you are paying a decent price for seed ($3.15/lb)and getting fertilizer to go with it

I buy 100% seed all the time from united seeds but this price has me intrigued for just some patching. I normally buy super turf II, which is a tttf like this

But in generally your statement is correct for the items sold for patching . Those are normally around 25% seed some fertilizer and mostly 50% ish for the "mulch"
This stuff works and I tore up an entire section of my yard in NJ and planted with it. This is cool season mix though so if you try to plant it anywhere south it won't work. And if you seed now in summer in the north it won't work either. Need to seed mid September and water daily.

Why won't it last? I'm under the impression that this product is just fine at what it does, you're just generally vastly overpaying for it.

People don't know where or what type of seed to buy. I believe there is more to it than just "100% seed"

This stuff is good for when you just want to dump it onto a sparse spot and be done. I wouldn't spend $$$$ but a deal makes it convenient.

I don't see anymore but it showed some zones up to 8. I'm in 9. Another indication was a message from Amazon saying not available for your area. Target is shipping only, not available in stores around me.

This worked fine for me in goergia. I tilled up the ground and set a timer on a water sprinker for twice a day for little over 2 weeks. It didn't look like sod but it was also expiring like the same month.

Fescue is a cool season grass, while it will survive in summer it will not be able tolerate warm temperatures all the time. It needs lots of water during the summer periods to even survive and it still gets flagged. Florida is a no go my friend.
