Honestly even though the construction is quite cheap, I have had a pair of these for over five years and have caught hundreds of fish with no issues. I am sure the included items may be useless but the rod and reel are great especially for the price.

Worth it for someone who hasn't fished in a while and will mostly just use it a few times a year?
Yeah, extremely popular size rod and reel. If you get something cheap and use it, that will help inform a next purchase.
I do bank fishing on smallish ponds, and 7' is just too long, too many limbs and bushes, but obviously someone who fishes from docks or boats would have completely different opinions.
Same with the reel, that would take up an obscene amount of 15lb braid, so I would end up backing it with something light and cheap, making a size 30 kind of pointless. Again ymmv.
Spinning reels are so simple that you can enjoy a cheap one, unlike baitcasters. But if you enjoy it, the feel of a quality reel is just a better experience. How much is that worth to you?

Very good combo for the price. I bought two as starter open real rods for my sons to grow into the last time they were on sale. I use them occasionally and they are fine. I'm not a fishing snob though, just a casual few times a month fisherman. They are smooth and functional and 1000% better than something like a zebco for the same price ROFL.
From the description seems like a decent enough rod/reel combo that would be great for anyone who just wants to fish and not worry about their gear being the envy of every angler on the lake. 3+1 ball bearings is a lot better than many of the budget reel offering, and I've always had pretty good luck with Abu Garcia products. I used to be a real fan of short, 5.5' ultralight freshwater rods and still love them. But my last few purchases have been a longer, more general purpose rods in the 7'+ range. This is a one piece rod so not likely to fit in the trunk of your compact car. Experienced anglers claim better feel and action on a one piece rod, but I've never felt much of a difference that I didn't attribute to other factor like rod action and build quality. 10lb mono is enough for bass, trout, pan fish and most freshwater species and what this comes spooled with should be sufficient. I've never spent much on high end mono, and and 95% of fishermen will be plenty well served with cheap Zebco Omniflex mono that you can get for almost nothing at Wally[walmart.com] if you feel a burning desire to change out what comes pre-spooled. Even the soft Berkley Baits this comes will will catch fish and I use similar all the time, though nothing is guaranteed and you should remember the old joke about it being called "fishing" and not "catching." If you need a fishing rod on the cheap, grab this. It's less money than you will spend driving your kids thru Burger King. Go fish, have fun, take a kid with you. If you up your fishing game to the point you feel let down by this budget combo, you'll likely know exactly what you want to upgrade to next. Fishing doesn't have to be expensive, just don't say the B-O-A-T word.
If there are no signs that say "No Fishing" and if your local area doesn't require a fishing license. In California, dock/pier fishing doesn't require a license but beach fishing does.
