I worked for Polo Ralph Lauren in college and I would say Vineyard Vines retail is comparable to Polo retail. Likewise, Vines outlet is similar to Polo outlet. The outlet prices are cheaper because they use cheaper materials and there may be details or features that are only on the full retail clothing.
I think you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay $80-$100 for 1 good quality shirt than get 3 for $30 that won't last a year.

My wife and I were never into the brand but wanted higher quality souvenir shirts so we ended up buying souvenirs t-shirts from the Vineyard Vines store in one of the towns on Martha's Vineyard and for the money we paid, they were the best quality compared to any at the other shops selling souvenir t shirts even though their shirts were made in China and some of the cheaper ones we found at other stores were made in US.
