A bit stunned that $18 is considered a deal for 4K UHD. Are Kino Lorber discs the new Criterion?

As a film aficionado and auteur of high fidelity home viewing (I have a sizeable 4K blu collection), I do not see any reason you would need to own or watch the original Mad Max in a 4K transfer. Believe me, I spent countless days of my childhood watching Mad Max and the Road Warrior over-and-over with my dad. I have watched the modern blu ray version several times. The way the movie is shot has a very characteristic film grain. It looks excellent in 1080 blu ray. I doubt there would be added benefit to watching it at a higher resolution, ESPECIALLY if it involves any kind of film grain clean up in order to ensure the 4K transfer lacks artifacting. Some movies are meant to be watched almost the way they were originally shot IMO. Even the recent Dark Knight 4K transfer doesn't seem to have added benefit to me. It was shot on film, with a grain. Aliens 4K transfer looks uncomfortable/bizarre to me with the AI generated grain clean up, but the Abyss 4K transfer that used the same process looks appropriate to me only because it is underwater mostly and you aren't taken mentally out of the intended look of the film. Aliens was meant to have a grittiness. I'm done with my rant.

It's a boutique label so this is Kino's standard sale pricing. Even Sony is moving more towards boutique pricing at the $30-$50 MSRP. Some 4K items from KL might dip a little more but not by much, and then on clearance a bit more - but that's holding out to the end. If you're looking for $10 4Ks it's only going to come from major studios like Universal.

I remember in like 1991 wanting to get my grandfather a VHS copy of 'The Hunt for Red October" for Christmas. It was $90. In 1991, $90 for a gift was WAY more than anyone in my family was able to spend on each other for gifts, so Poppy got a tool instead. I was actually glad it was that expensive, because it turned out he hated the movie, and much preferred whatever tool-du-jour he received🤣
