Pro tip: a wire nut makes a great screw on cap for these.

WD is a penetrating oil, good for getting stuff moving temporarily, but it will wear out quickly. 3-in-1 is also a penetrating oil but also good for more permanent applications like squeaky door hinges.

I've had a bottle of this since I can't remember when. I lost the cap long ago but just keep it upright.

I've used this on door hinges, kids bicycle, and even on hvac fan bearings and it works great.

Don't recommend it for sliding doors as it accumulates too much dirt and junk.

In a garage or shop? Sure.

Inside the house...motor oil is smelly and has all kinds of additives that are best left to outside spaces.

For hinges, sewing machines, small appliances, zippers, luggage casters...3-in-1 is a better choice.

Im not your grandparents but I have one of these inh my garage and its the go to. There should be far less WD-40 applied and far more of this instead.

If you are talking about the basic WD-40 multi-use, it is a jack of all trades, master of none. Being simultaneously a lubricant, corrosion inhibitor, penetrant, water displacer, and cleaner. The 3-in-1 oil portrays itself as just a lubricant, penetrant, and cleaner, which, without the water displacer, probably does a better job at those tasks.

But WD-40 [wd40.com] makes dozens of different products for many specialized applications and they seem to be pretty good for what they're designed for.

It should be noted that 3-in-1 [3inone.com] is also a WD-40 product.

WD40 is a thin cleaner/rust remover, not a god choice for a long lasting lubricant.
