Their coffee is really, really bad!
I know I can't really complain when something is free but I've gotten to where I'd rather pay for coffee that I actually enjoy drinking somewhere else.

However, the response that this moronic soda police woman would've received from me is, NO, it isn't "stealing" because I was still on the premises! Instead of walking away with YOUR tail between YOUR legs, she would be walking away with HER tail between HER legs (because she's full of crap)!
I have been told (at a different McDonald's when I asked) that you are not allowed to order in the drive-thru and then eat in your car and come in for refills. But I have no idea why they would even care. I imagine again these wannabes are just being jerks.

What we do is go pick up a couple large coffees and just fill the cup to the brim with coffee, no ice. Then we keep it in the fridge in a large dispenser and sip off it all day.

.....and they haven't bothered to reopen them, since they discovered that it's more profitable to limit it to one drink! Since you asked why they would care, the only thing that they care about is profits! I can't even understand why these restaurants ever started with "free refills" in the first place?

But TBH, my lady acted like she wanted to fight about it, so I was the bigger person at my expense for the drink special in the app I used ($1). My original meal was a combo.
