Is there a big difference between Ryzen 5 and 7 8000 series?
It's not about Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7.

AMD 8000 series is basically identical to 7000 series mobile save the for AI NPU. The most important number in a AMD mobile CPU is the third digit. 7X40 and 8X40 are the only ones worth buying if you are paying more than $300-400. As the 4 indicates Zen 4 architecture.

For the 7000 and 8000 generation, all the Ryzen 7 come with 780m iGPU which is theoretically 50% faster than 760m iGPU on the Ryzen 5. Note that some Ryzen 5 starting wtih 754X and 854X come with 740m which is only 1/3 as powerul as the 780m.

Is the RAM upgradable for future proofing or is it only Soldered RAM? Also, I bought this Dell from Costco at $550:
https://www.costco.com/dell-inspi...62474.html

Is this HP better than the Dell from Costco?

Thanks a lot for your response.

Don't need a new laptop until first week of August for school. Jump on this or wait for something better in the same price range?

Wait until the last minute in hopes of saving a few bucks or end up w/ marginally better specs? Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

If it was me, I'd want something I can get familiar w/ NOW, not 3 days before class starts. Heck, you may need to return it!

What does HS stand for?

One of the things I find troubling is the lack of specifics regarding storage. It just says SSD, but that could be SATA or NVMe. The former would limit you to ~540MBs, whereas the latter, even using a crappy low-end SSD, would get you 1400-1800MBs.

It says "512 GB PCIe® Gen4 NVMe™ M.2 SSD" on the specs shared above.

Thanks. Finally found it. I was just searching the website page for NVME but never got a hit. Finally had to bring up one of the side panels to find it.

So roughly what generation Intel processor is this one equivalent to?
U - low wattage mobile
H - medium wattage mobile
HS - medium wattage mobile, lower than H in wattage
HX - highest wattage mobile, thick gaming or workstation laptop

This is equivalent to an Intel 13/14th gen. Intel Ultra is quite a bit better than this due its amazing iGPU, but those laptops are $900+ right now. This is fairly low in core count as Intel is handing out efficiency cores on laptops to boost multithreaded performance. Most Intel laptop will be a lot more powerful when running heavy multithread compute.

In terms of battery life for the average use (web, office, internet, video, etc), AMD and Intel are in parity.

When CPU is loaded for real compute; Intel is completely non-competative on desktop/laptop consuming 2-3x more power to get the same peak performance. But you do get more peak performance (like video rendering/encoding).
