here's what I recall.. I have a 4k projector that doesn't use DV, therefore I have the 420.

420 Does not have DV, but has an HDR Optimizer that people really liked.

450 Has DV, but does NOT have the HDR Optimizer. Heard it lost a number of options

820 Top model
Better hdr support, Dolby vision support
PlayStation 5 (PS5) does not support HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, which are premium HDR formats that can improve picture quality.

From the Pana page regarding upscaling:

"Upconvert DVDs

From legendary epics to of-the-moment sci-fi masterpieces--Ultra HD Blu-ray Playback (4K/HDR) renders films in vibrant, expressive color, supporting multiple HDR formats such as HDR10, which is the standard HDR format for films, and UHD Blu-ray discs. The newly supported HDR playback of HDR10+/ Dolby VisionTM dynamic metadata technology to faithfully reproduce stunning HDR images."

Re-reading this, does not mention anything about upconvert.. other than section title.

I'm still waiting for the Dolby Vision upgrade to my LD UHD player from years ago!!

Seems like a great option given how huge the price gap is between this model and the 820 for the upscaling capability.

This is not new.. The UB-820 is the gold standard of 4k Players.

This is the 420/450.

Doesn't the 420 also have the up conversion for DVD and Blu-Ray content? Makes them look sharper, not just HDR? I've been looking for an upconverting player and have been watching the 420 for that reason. Hope I'm not wrong.

This was released several years ago although I do not think it came to the US until recently. One review on Amazon complained about the audio and then i found a review on https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/...dp-ub450eb that says the audio is mediocre. Too bad as the Sony players went up in price.

Your 4k tv upscales everything to 4k . No need for the player to do that. Your TV knows how to upscale best and properly for it's hardware.

Not new this just wasn't released in the US much.
You gain DV but you lose the HCX and Optimizer processing.

If all you will play is DV content, this makes sense.
With anything else you lose out.

Well not all 4k TVs scale the same.

Having compared the two it depends but even with a Oled I thought overall Panasonic was slightly better.
Same holds true with tone mapping HDR10 content, the optimizer does a great job.
This is why the 420 is pretty much a must have for projectors.

Keep in mind Panasonic uses the HCX chip in their Oled display which are highly regarded displays.

Their new Oleds have a new HCX chip, will be interesting to see if they come out with a new player with it.🤔

Gave you a provisional like.

DV versus HDR on streaming is identically bad.

On physical media at fully uncompressed everything, with a mid to high end tv, the difference is dolby vision is about 10 percent "better". It's a matter of the details in the bright areas. It's not a jump out a window if you don't have it, but it's better....ish.
